Government-backed bank in talks about recompensing about 37,000 people whose money was misplaced * UK politics live – latest updates * Business live – latest updates National Savings and Investments is preparing to repay hundreds of millions of pounds to its customers over missing savings, in what is expected to be the single biggest payout in the bank’s 160-year history. Perhaps now might be the right time to ‘pause’ Strictly, given the departure of the two hosts, the various ‘inappropriate behaviour’ scandals and the lack of BAFTA nominations. All shows have a shelf life so maybe it’s best to quit now while you’re ahead.

1/2 Events in the Middle East revive memories of the Tyne-built Kharg, an Iranian Navy ship. Named after Iran’s Kharg Island, the fleet replenishment tanker was launched in 1977, but was not delivered to Iran until 1984 due to an arms embargo during the Iran-Iraq war.

The BBC says it is open to the idea of a ‘household levy’ (ie tax) to replace the TV licence fee. Yet Government research in 2016 showed only 11pc of people would be in favour of this funding model. I wouldn’t mind betting it’s a lot lower than that ten years on.

The first UK number 1 record of the 1960s was What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For? by Emile Ford & The Checkmates. After six weeks in the top spot, it was replaced by Starry Eyed by Michael Holliday. Two years later #TheBeatles broke and changed pop music for ever.

“Whether it's this week's fiasco, or the decision on winter fuel allowance, or lifting the cap on bigger families getting some benefits, there's deep frustration in government more broadly that so much of what it has spent time doing is reversing its own positions.” - Laura Kuenssberg, BBC.

A £5.50 (3.15%) rise in the BBC TV licence fee to £180 a year from April, adding to the increases in broadband/mobile costs due to be imposed, plus rising energy bills. So this is Starmer’s Labour government helping to tackle the cost of living crisis. #ScrapTheTVLicenceFee

A cut or a freeze would have been the sensible option as people continue to struggle to cope with the cost of living crisis. Better still, scrap the TV licence fee altogether. #ScrapTheTVLicenceFee

I’m surprised soul expert #TonyBlackburn didn’t spot the obvious error in a listener’s ‘joke’ he read out about “Motown weather” on today’s #SoundsOfThe60s. The ‘punchline’ referred to The Three Degrees, who weren’t actually Motown artists - they recorded on the Philadelphia label.

Let’s not forget that #AndyBurnham has failed TWICE before to become Labour leader. He came FOURTH out of five candidates in the 2010 contest, won by Ed Miliband. Then in 2015 he finished a distant second behind Jeremy Corbyn. Not exactly a great track record.

I am at an age where most of what I read, watch or listen to has a strong whiff of nostalgia. I re-discovered this early-1970s book, “a critical history of pop”, by #NikCohn, during a recent loft clearout. The title is taken from the lyrics of Little Richard’s ‘Tutti Fruitti’.

Had to smile at the ‘no-advertising’ #BBC’s news item about Christmas TV ads - effectively giving free plugs to various retailers. Perhaps the Beeb should embrace advertising as a regular revenue stream - as in their overseas service - instead of relying on the TV licence fee.
