A lot of shit in the news today, but this is my favorite story because it suggests a tasty metaphor for the current leadership of the United States.

back to 30 under par thanks to two deuces in six days, one clever work on my part and one just dumb luck, plus a couple of birdies and only one bogey. Whoever is picking words these days has moved a little away from the intentionally treacherous, it seems to me. Kill the bots!

Trump Has Brutalized Blue States in His Second Term. There’s a Way for Democrats to Fight Back.
The Trump administration has actively discriminated against “blue” states by systemically withholding money. That's not the worst part.

Just want to let Donald Trump know that I just requested my mail-in ballot for November 3. My polling place is just up the street and I usually enjoy going there, but my district and state is reliably blue so, in order to maximize annoyance for the President, I'm going to mail it in.

GOP senators went on and on about that poor mom getting arrested at a high school football game then suffering due process. Meanwhile they wholeheartedly support thousands of moms getting thrown in vehicles by masked men and just fucking disappeared. Another place for some side-by-side video ads.

Crazy this must be said: The Justice Department can't be 'weaponized' because it's already a weapon. It's a weapon the people wield against crime. That is how it was conceived, what it did (mostly) for its entire history, and what it needs to do now. The only argument is who gets aimed at.

Midterms are the chance for voters to express their wishes. Democrats see in Trump II fuckups, own-goals, and knee-jerk stupidity. Maybe Republicans and swing voters see it differently? But preventing or delaying a vote is not an option. Make Republicans understand that we won't tolerate it.

It is useful—it serves his people by feeding the Political Vices: Greed, Bigotry, Resentment, Paranoia, False Nostalgia, Coercive Religion, Revenge, Revision of Loss, and Apocalypticism. The tribe lives on combinations of these and the leaders’s gestures provide them.

The DOJ is already a weapon against crime. If the defendant did it and the prosecution is consistent, that’s not weaponization. The January 6 guys did it. We saw them do it. They were tried and convicted by a jury. Pardons don’t change that; a pardon in that case is just another crime. They did it.

Trump‘s people don’t actually make videos of him being a hero. They make videos of him bullying people. In fact, bullying—usually fellow Americans—is the central policy position of Trump‘s Republican Party. That’s all he does. That’s all his people want him to do.

THEY DID IT. The DOJ is a political entity. It exists to prosecute federal crimes, among other things. It is a WEAPON AGAINST CRIME. The J6 people DID FEDERAL CRIMES. DOJ functioned as intended—as a crime weapon. Investigated. (Easy—watch the video). Indicted. Convicted. Sentenced. THEY DID IT.

All DOJ personnel who take part in investigations intended to intimidate political opponents must be fired immediately, even if they were ordered to do so. As sworn federal agents they are obliged to give any and all information on these investigations to the public. They cannot continue to serve.

I avoid participial phrases, which I consider a lazy shortcut. As I read, I cheered Spufford for avoiding them. Then I reread and found a couple. For each, I could not supply a better adjective. I am forced to accept defeat and drop my crochety absolute. Good writers can use PP's; I can't.

"Nonesuch" by Francis Spufford--it's been a long time since I've read a novel that combines stylistic depth with intense character and a real sense of place and action. It took me a while to get my head around it. Back to the joy of relishing sentences instead of compromising with them.
