george has learned to love
Street sticker made from a USPS Priority Mail shipping label (Label 228, December 2023), wrinkled and pasted onto a lamppost or utility box coated in silver paint over scraps of earlier stickers. Across the label, in thick black marker, someone has drawn a horse in naive outline: a long sagging back, a pointed ear, two looping eyes like spectacles, a blunt muzzle, stiff slab-like front legs, a single heavy, bent hind leg, and a dense scribbled tail. Handwriting above the horse reads "George has learned," and "Love" is written beside the printed "TO:" field, so the label is addressed "TO: Love." The "FROM:" field is blank.

also fun when the only annotation you need is this
The instrument did not choose this ceremony.
My mother offered me five strings, nouns
without a grammar.
I left my mother's emptiness, to embrace my own.
Whose darkness sits in the north,
if no one can sing my sorrow?

annotation: two exclamation points to the left of the emptiness line

poetry is just more fun when reading it involves doing this
poem by jay wright full of annotations

POEM:

The pentatonic spring washes its winter clothes.
Five is a difficult color—
not this green of reflected sky, nor the red
clamor of midnight riding by on a church bell.
Think of the Greek of it,
an Egyptian river,
the dry desert voice you hear in the cleansing.
All before this moment found its own measure,
an ingenious inganno, a blessure
occasioned by a consonant's turmoil,
a Germanic algebra brightly a-boil
through all the strings, a fortspinning always pure,
always a public shrine to a wood secure
in its origin.
                    White is a difficult
sound in the edowa above the tumult
fastened to the soul of widows, magnitude
that arms the darkest nebula. The rude
dead awaken to another baptism.

Contrived to captivate the fly,

For animals by living die—

death has in the foregoing paragraph been considered as merely the cessation of life; yet it may be proper to observe, that those physiologists appear to have reason on their side, who make it generally an inevitable and necessary consequence of life. In the higher animals and plants, indeed, we are certain that if death should not be produced by accidental causes, it is sure in due time to result from the fibres which compose the cellular substance growing so thick and rigid, that the fluids cannot penetrate through their interstices. In this sense a body receiving nourishment may be said to imbibe death: so true it is, that by living we die.

Jean-Léon Gérôme's famous 1860 painting of Diogenes in his barrel, but Diogenes has the "I am very intelligent" speech bubble from the guy in the well comic.

In the painting, Diogenes sits inside a large terracotta pithos lying on its side against a stone pedestal, with the carved signature "J.L. GEROME – MDCCCLX" at the top. He is bare-chested and barefoot, with shaggy dark hair and beard, a white cloth knotted at his hips, and straw scattered beneath him. He bends intently over a glowing lantern balanced on his knee, trimming its wick. A staff leans against the jar with a pale rag and a dark blue cloak hanging from it. Four dogs attend him: a gray-brindled one lies in the left foreground, and a dark brown one, a brown-and-white one, and a shaggy tan one sit together at the right, all watching. Behind them a sunlit ancient street recedes toward pale buildings, small robed figures, and a stray dog.

the pipes of earth have pulled out of ed sheeran's tour
Sir Mottled said:
When Big Clod belches breath,
Its name is wind. If only it didn’t rise!
Rising, and the ten thousand apertures rage—
Have you alone never heard their roaring?
Mountain forests’ crags and scarps,
huge trees, hundreds of spans round,
their apertures and hollows
like noses, like mouths, like ears;
like sockets, like bowls, like mortars;
like sinks, like sloughs—
spouters, whizzers,
bawlers, suckers,
shouters, howlers,
wailers, screamers—
the leaders chanting gwraaa,
the followers chanting qrommm—
a cool breeze makes a small harmony;
stormwinds make a big harmony;
the rasping winds cease,
and the manifold apertures empty—
Have you alone never seen this sinuous swaying,
this flittery flutter?

numinous.
When the people of Zheng saw him,

If three people travel and one is perplexed, their destination
can still be reached-the perplexed are few;
If two are perplexed, they labor and do not arrive-the perplexed dominate.
Now Under Heaven is perplexed:
though I have a place I turn toward,

sorry but the guy who wrote these two poems was capable of doing better with an opening as amazing as "As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame"
The Windhover

I caught this morning morning's minion, king-
dom of daylight's dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate's heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird, – the achieve of, the mastery of the thing!

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: shéer plód makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermilion.
["No worst, there is none. Pitched past pitch of grief,"]
BY GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS

No worst, there is none. Pitched past pitch of grief,
More pangs will, schooled at forepangs, wilder wring.
Comforter, where, where is your comforting?
Mary, mother of us, where is your relief?
My cries heave, herds-long; huddle in a main, a chief-
Woe, wórld-sorrow; on an áge-old ánvil wínce and síng —
Then lull, then leave off. Fury had shrieked 'No ling-
Ering! Let me be fell: force I must be brief.'
O the mind, mind has mountains; cliffs of fall
Frightful, sheer, no-man-fathomed. Hold them cheap
May who ne'er hung there. Nor does long our small
Durance deal with that steep or deep. Here! creep,
Wretch, under a comfort serves in a whirlwind: all
Life death does end and each day dies with sleep.

edmond jabès (tr. waldrop)
A man called death a tide:
lite sings
at high tide; at low tide
the world weeps.

A man called death a bride:
life sings
on the wedding day; in the night of man
the world weeps.

A man called death a canopy:
the iris sings
under blue sky; in the dark of walls
the world weeps.

A man called death like himself:
the body sings
with all pores at dawn; at dusk
the soul weeps.

This man, where is he?
Death is calling.

"and another thing. i'm not mad. please don't put it in the newspaper that i got mad." - ws merwin
December: Of Aphrodite

Whatever the books may say, or the plausible Chroniclers intimate: that I was mad,
That an unsettling wind that season
Fretted my sign and fetched up violence
From the vagaries of dream, or even that pride
Is a broad road with few turnings, do not
Believe them. In her name I acted.

moss found the passage for me
"Telemachus, you must hide away our war-gear in the house, every piece; and then, when the suitors see it is gone and start asking questions, put them off with soft, beguiling words:
"I have stowed them away from the smoke, for they are no longer as Odysseus left them when he went to Troy, long ago, but are damaged where the heat of the fire has got to them.
There is, too, a more serious thought that Cronus' son has put into my mind: that when full of wine you may come to blows and injure each other, and so bring shame on your feasting and your courtship—for iron of itself draws a man on."

Once Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly,
Light-heartedly a butterfly,
Flitting as he pleased—
not knowing Zhou.
Suddenly waking—
wooden Zhou,
Not knowing: Zhou’s dream of being a butterfly?

Zhou and a butterfly—surely there is a division.
