While I agree with the statement, the first question I would ask is: why the hell are elections being demanded in Ukraine rather than in russia, where tsar putin has been in power for almost three decades? Isn’t that the real problem in the first place?

There is one obvious pattern: countries whose populations support russia tend to perform poorly economically. It doesn’t seem to matter whether they’re in the EU or part of the post-Soviet bloc. Take Germany—the formerly Soviet-occupied part of the country performs worse economically.

I especially like it when The Economist analyzes the russian economy by relying solely on official Russian statistics without so much as a caveat. Apparently, inflation is only 4–6% amid a 14%+ key rate, GDP is growing at a moderate pace amid declining transportation, and so on.

It’s so ridiculous how long Trump has avoided calling putin a war criminal. Instead, he continues to refer to him as if he were just another ordinary politician.

In my opinion, organizations like FIFA, UEFA, the UN, and the IOC have become morally bankrupt and deeply corrupt. Their actions and double standards are absolutely disgusting.

I guess a single hit wouldn’t be enough to sink a tanker. The damage would likely need to be much more widespread, and I’m not sure a drone’s explosive payload would be sufficient to cause that level of damage, given that tankers are highly complex structures.

Likewise, how do declining freight transport volumes and air passenger traffic align with the reported GDP growth figures?

A somewhat disappointing read. The analysis relies heavily on official statistics to argue that the russian economy is doing relatively well, but it overlooks key inconsistencies. For example, why is the policy rate nearly three times higher than official inflation?

I would name a few: 1. Obtaining additional/some anti-ballistic missiles. 2. Continuing to receive intelligence data for tracking russia’s ballistic missile launches. 3. Potentially slowing down the pace at which sanctions on russia are eased.

What is even more absurd is that, with access to an LLM and just a few examples of the new camouflage, it is relatively easy to generate synthetic data and retrain models within a short period of time so that they can recognize these new targets as valid.

Without the United States having pressured Ukraine to relinquish its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees, there would not have been a war lasting even a single day.

I wonder whether there was any practical benefit to removing the sanctions, given that russia would likely still have been interested in selling its oil, even at a discount.

Did the impacted area appear more scattered when you were there? Apparently, the strike pattern observed in the available footage seems relatively dense for cluster munitions, which are generally known for poor accuracy.

Actually, russia is primarily interested in selling its oil, so keeping sanctions in place may be more beneficial for global prices, as it encourages cheaper oil supply. Lifting sanctions could have the opposite effect by allowing more expensive supply to enter the market.

I see it as a consequence. In the long run, staying close to russia means fewer reforms, more corruption, less competition, and worse overall economic conditions—making it easier to bribe. A perfect loop.

Actually, I don’t know which world is safer: the one where a few countries have nuclear weapons and set rules for other non-nuclear states, or the world where every country has such weapons.

Many of the points you mentioned can be addressed. You probably don’t need much knowledge to conclude that there is no real democracy in Turkey, even though it is a NATO member.

In my view, a union with growing imbalances. For example, when highly indebted countries pay the same yields as low-debt countries, or when a corrupt government from a relatively weak economy can completely block decision-making — makes the EU’s existence unsustainable in the long run.

Measuring democracy is more challenging, although actions aimed at shifting the balance of power or falsifying elections can still be noticed/assessed. for example, through a voting mechanism in which each member annually determines whether specific standards have been met.

I agree there is no easy answer. However, debt-to-GDP can be measured against predefined thresholds; the size of the economy or GDP per capita can also be taken into account.

The issue I see with the current approach is that it does not provide enough incentive for countries to be democratic or to ensure fiscal stability. The better a country performs, the more decision-making power it should have.

There was tactical surprise in the Kharkiv region and during the Kursk operation. The summer counterattack, however, was hardly surprising, since the attack location was quite predictable.

I think it is misleading to cite official ru figures such as GDP growth, as they were likely falsified. Based on indirect indicators such as declining air passenger traffic and rail cargo traffic, the more likely GDP growth scenario is −0.7% to −1%.

Absolutely crystal-clear logic by ruzzians — when they can’t meet military goals, they terrorise civilians even more. And all this is happening under the ‘greatest leader of America of all time,’ who supposedly would have stopped the war on day one.

Not to mention that production costs in the US are much higher than in many EU countries, such as Poland. “It will be 10 percent,” he argued, and cost “billions and billions of euros” to replace America’s nuclear deterrent.”

I have no doubt that the PAC-3 interceptor gap was orchestrated by the US to make Kyiv more willing to accept a “peace” deal.
