‘It could knock a whole street down’: the art of defusing a second world war bomb
The long read: On 14 January this year, army and navy squads faced an unprecedented challenge: one bomb on a Plymouth building site, another floating on a dredger in Exmouth. That afternoon, the clock started ticking

Oh Daleks, Public Information Films but this episode of Space 1999 titled "Dragon's Domain" scared me witless with extremely graphic scenes, shown in the early evening slot and aimed at kids..

“Bongo” Ballpoint pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a little colored pencil.

Our man is in trouble this time, reader. Art supplies are scattered around a painting of an abstract cityscape. On the canvas we see a man in a telephone booth making a frantic call to his cat, Bongo. In the foreground, an answering machine is taking his voicemail, [Leave a message at the beep] --- “Bongo, Daddy got stuck in the painting. Go get help, Bongo.” Bongo stands at the base of the easel looking at the phone. Her tail in the air and ears perked up. Whether she’ll be able to help is open to interpretation.

Artist’s note: One of my favorites from the Spooky Pants book. I was playing around with the idea of a painting coming to life (like that guy in Ghostbusters 2) and kind of fumbled my way into this version. I really draw a lot of corded phones. I won’t stop.

A cash-strapped rural police force struggles to deal with Red Diesel gangs. Until its chief inspector realises can get the Met Police to deal with the problem... ...if he pretends they're Iranian. A new six part comedy starring Toby Jones.

Steak and Kidney pies are actually a thing in Malta, like proper Fish and Chips and UK plugs. Drive on the left as well. Lots of rabbit, pasta, pizza and North African influences in their cuisine. Local wine is good but doesn't travel.

Oh I love episodes IV, V & VI but I grew up with them. I loved Rogue One. The rest.. meh apart from Grogu. There's no depth to the universe, Star Trek gives a much richer and coherent story.

Actually the Jeff Wayne version is one of the best adaptations IMO

Probably the benchmark for all the other adaptations to be judged against. Never seen a good Victorian-era adaptation, the BBC tried an Edwardian (early 1900s) one but it wasn't very good.

He was by necessity an excellent mouser. One day he brought one back to eat, only to be confronted with a bowl of Whiskas for his lunch. His tail swished for quite a while as he decided which was tastier, in the end he went for the Whiskas.

I'm not sure strays live that long, our first cat had lived rough for a few years before we got him, he was only about 12 when he died.. rough living isn't good for life expectancy in cats or humans.

‘London has fallen’ – except the facts tell a very different story
Online trolls claiming London as a crime-ridden city in terminal decline are leaving the public with a badly distorted impression of life in the capital, according to a new study.

I wrote about it at the time - www.dynamoo.com/diary/0109.htm - it's odd that in a few years we'd become addicted to internet news. Ananova was one of the only things that was working, some gimmicky news site that originally had an avatar read the news to you, but it was the PA at least.

Conversely you could argue that the first commercial web browser - Netscape Navigator - is one thing that marks the transition. Surprisingly it was launched in December 1994, not far from the Hobsbawm event horizon.

Hmm... nothing really happened on Y2K, but that was because (almost) everything was fixed. From a technical point of view it's anchored to 20th century tech (Cobol! Fortran!).

We had become very dependent on the internet for news in just a few short years, but it was before the days of social media. If 9/11 happened today we'd all be exposed to the horror from the first person perspective. Perhaps it is good we didn't have that then. [8/8]

We didn't know at the time, but the internet had taken a lot of physical damage when the towers came down as the site was also a communications hub. Everything on the internet was impacted by the haphazard traffic rerouting. Emails that would cross the Atlantic in minutes took hours. [7/8]

Coworkers in the building had wheeled out the big TVs we used for presentations, but not of them had antennas. People rigged up bits of cable as makeshift aerials. We wandered through the office (the only people working) while everyone else watched the blurry images in shock. [6/8]

Conrad Longmore @conradlongmore.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
It wasn't popular, but it was working and the PA is a reliable source of news. It had to do. Much as though we wanted to watch the unfolding disaster, the boss reminded us that we were in the middle of a project and really needed to go and install some hardware elsewhere in the building. [5/8]

Conrad Longmore @conradlongmore.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
..we tuned that in and watched the horror on a tiny black and white screen. The first tower came down, we couldn't quite make out what happened. The only working news site we could find was Ananova, run by the Press Association. Ananova's gimmick was that the news was read by an avatar. [4/8]

Conrad Longmore @conradlongmore.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
This was obviously no accident. By 2001 we were used to consuming news on the internet. But all the news sites were crawling, and as more and more people looked for information it got worse and worse. The guy at the next desk had a tiny TV for surreptitiously watching horse racing.. [3/8]

It was a normal day in the office, there were three people in the IT office. My colleague came in and casually mentioned that a small plane had accidentally hit the WTC. That seemed kind of interesting, but then someone in the office got news that a second plane had hit the WTC. [2/8]

I still remember exactly what I was doing on 9/11, I was safely on the other side of the Atlantic but suddenly all the new sources stopped working. I wrote a little piece almost 25 years ago.. [1/8] www.dynamoo.com/diary/0109.htm

..but the internet stopped working, it was like being thrown back into the distant past. Unless you could find a TV or radio you wouldn't know what was going on (even then it didn't really help). So yes, there was a definitely shift in a few short years.

I wrote a diary entry about 9/11 at the time - www.dynamoo.com/diary/0109.htm - in it I compare 9/11 to the death of Princess Diana four years before. In 1997 news sources were the TV, radio and newspapers, in 2001 we were used to consuming news from the internet..
