Calvin and Hobbes comic strip.
First panel, Calvin's in bed. His mom walks in and asks "What's wrong, Calvin? Why are you still in bed?" Calvin replies, "I don't feel good."
Second panel, mom puts her hand on Calvin's forehead, says, "Your forehead seems warm. We'd better take your temperature."
Third panel, close up of Calvin yelling to mom (not visible), "I can't be sick NOW! It's still summer vacation! There's no school to stay home from! This is MY time!"
Fourth panel, Calvin hollering to the sky, "SOMEBODY OWES ME BIG FOR THIS!!"

Fall still the greatest season, no question, no debate, no serious pushback

oh, those rascally Dogee-bros www.chalkbeat.org/2026/09/08/p...
Screenshot of this text: U.S. results were not broken out by race and family poverty, key drivers of academic gaps, because more than 40% of U.S. students who took the tests did not take an accompanying questionnaire. The Education Department acknowledged a “month-long pause in PISA activity in spring 2025” resulting in some questionnaires not being administered.

This was also when the U.S. DOGE Service was cutting contracts and staff at the Education Department research arm, the Institute of Education Sciences. Matthew Soldner, acting director of IES, did not respond to questions about whether these cuts were related to the data gaps.

It’s so loud under the war games here.

From my morning run past the race car circus in DC this am.
Picture of an entrance to the Indy car race in DC. The photo is sunny, though the entrance is on the other side of a concrete rail bridge overpass, so there’s a lot of shadows between the photographer and the small clutch of people in line to enter.

1) This article gets at a real thing worth thinking about. 2) It's mostly insightful and cautious. 3) This excerpt here made me laugh (sadly, ruefully, scornfully). www.theatlantic.com/family/2026/...
Screenshot of text that reads, 'One is that liberals are more likely to follow a broad array of mainstream news sources, which may make them more aware of societal problems such as climate change or rising authoritarianism, and thus more concerned about bringing children into a world with such seemingly intractable challenges. Keeping up with current events could also alert liberals to changes in state policies that make pregnancy riskier. “The media that you consume, is it telling you that you might not be able to get pregnancy care if you need it?” Karen Guzzo, a demographer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who studies family formation, asked me.'

Can't believe the guy who famously beat the odds and bankrupted a *casino* also managed to use the world's most powerful military to achieve a humiliating defeat against a vastly weaker adversary.

Wrote this the last time climate-fueled wildfires made it impossible to breathe outside in DC. time.com/6293708/amer...
Screenshot of text reading: “What do you mean I need to wear a mask outdoors today?” my kid asked.

I pointed at the front yard. “See that haze? It’s from a bunch of wildfires up north. The air’s not safe to breathe today.”

“Ugh.” they spluttered. “America.”

Their sibling, listening in from the couch, yelled, “No. Ugh—humans.”

My kids are typical for their cohort. By almost any measure, today’s young Americans are pessimists. Polls show that they have a jaded view of the country, its leaders, its economy, and its public institutions.

This match marked a significant moment as Egypt has historically performed well against Belgium in their encounters."

Still thinking about this—substantively dumb, politically illuminating—subcommittee hearing. Was just reading this passage from the Supreme Court's 1982 Plyler decision. Conservatives have no new ideas. They have no new facts. They want to force their old, bad, wrong proposals to victory anyway.
Screenshot of text reading: First, appellants appear to suggest that the State may seek to protect itself from an influx of illegal immigrants. While a State might have an interest in mitigating the potentially harsh economic effects of sudden shifts in population, hardly offers an effective method of dealing with an urgent demographic or economic problem. There is no evidence in the record suggesting that illegal entrants impose any significant burden on the State's economy. To the contrary, the available evidence suggests that illegal aliens underutilize public services, while contributing their labor to the local economy and tax money to the state fisc. The dominant incentive for illegal entry into the State of Texas is the availability of employment; few if any illegal immigrants come to this country, or presumably to the State of Texas, in order to avail themselves of a free education. Thus, even making the doubtful assumption that the net impact of illegal aliens on the economy of the State is negative, we think it clear that "[c]harging tuition to undocumented children constitutes a ludicrously ineffectual attempt to stem the tide of illegal immigration," at least when compared with the alternative of prohibiting the employment of illegal aliens.
