I mean, I don't think that's true. The thought that unbelievers are actively punished in the afterlife - punished for beliefs rather than evil deeds - is a uniquely Christian idea; it just doesn't exist in most religions

I would find Trump's naked jealousy over Obama's Nobel Peace Prize funnier if I didn't remember that giving the award to Obama (who I do generally like, but who did precisely zero to warrant the prize) was an embarrassing travesty that should never have happened

I mean, no one asked me, but in my opinion the only remotely justifiable reason to go to mars was as a stepping stone for getting out of the system. But I don't see a compelling reason to rush there in this century

This is not Milligan's gravestone, notably because the famous epitaph was in Irish Gaelic, not... whatever this is

One of the reasons I get angry when people say "weight loss is just calories in, calories out" is that it completely neglects the fact that your body has a set point, an amount of weight it thinks it should be at, and it is actively fighting to get back to.

Also, a) as someone who grew up in Scotland in the 90s, git tae fuck with patronising Edinburgh like it's some kind of backwater, and b) she lived in Clapham for years when she was developing the stories, so unless you're going to tell me London had no fucking Chinese people in it, go die in a fire

I feel like this is missing the point a little - there were plenty of Irish people in Scotland, and she still made Seamus a stereotype complete with IRA bombing in-jokes. Like it or not, the casual stereotypes were an intentional trope of her writing.

Living in the UK, I can confirm that two X chromosomes do not guarantee compassionate or competent leadership. I will celebrate it as a milestone of progress when it happens, just... Thatcher, May and Truss did not deliver progressive politics to my country.

It's not particularly gay (despite revolving around Athenian theatre) but Ferdia Lennon's Glorious Exploits is brilliant for pretentious litfic lovers and I have been recommending it to anyone who will listen

I see an unwillingness to follow the evidence to inconvenient conclusions, but not all conclusions are so inconvenient.

While there is probably something to this, I think it's dangerous to extrapolate a rule from striking examples. Fascism in particular is technophilic, and there are equal examples where authoritarian regimes were engines of technological progress.

The first time I heard about the pencil test, it was a friend with ADHD telling me she had gotten distracted trying it and only realised three days later the pencil was still under there. I'm still not sure if she passed or failed.

When I cook and then try to wash some of the dishes, my girlfriend yells at me 😅 Not because I do it badly (I hope!) but because she feels like i'm doing too much I think we both have people-pleaser instincts. I really hate it when people clean/tidy for me too

On the subject of things that will get you called dumb by people who practice it: "lab introducing DNA is that it’s done for profit with no thought on human health" Except when it isn't, e.g. golden rice. The technology used does not imply intent.

Not wanting to be "that guy" but... Do you really believe everyone gets what they deserve? I feel like both directions - that the beneficiaries of luck and unequal systems deserve their evident prosperity, and that the unfortunate deserve their misery - seem like damaging falsehoods

Are we imagining distributed cognitive power as well? I wonder if that would feel like increasing brain fog as you lose fellow nodes of thought, faculties you took for granted slipping away from you piece by piece...

Despite listening to that song roughly once every fifteen minutes for the whole of 2009, for some reason my brain absolutely refused to parse that at first, leaving me with just this faint sense of familiarity that I eventually had to google. ...and now I'm hungry for Tapas.

I want to say that if you can't find chicks who identify as sapiosexuals, you're looking in the wrong places; I see them all the time. On the other hand, I hope he doesn't try too hard, because I'm pretty sure they will stop announcing it pretty fast when knobs like him find them.

What's the methodology? Sources consulted? Definition of disinformation? What did chatgpt DO to come up with the list? Leaving aside any particular criticisms you have of AI, this is literally like asking a passerby on the street "off the top of your head, name ten people with bad vibes"

Due to an unusal pronounciation and unexpected definite article, I just had a moment of wondering how I had missed Chris Nolan's "Theodicy" (presumably a three hour epic meditation on the problem of evil)

August was named after a dude called Augustus (similarly, July after that guy's predecessor Julius). However, before that, they were known as Quintilis and Sextilis respectively, and I cannot find a good explanation for why the naming convention suddenly starts using "membris" after that

Yeah, I had a suspicion this was a "listed building" sort of situation; you can brick up the passage if you do it in appropriate materials, but you can't remove the gate.

Like, in the text, the seeing stones are depicted being used four times - in three of them, careful use of the flow of information is weaponised against one of the participants, and in the fourth a lack of context causes mild chaos for one user and permanent psychological damage for the other
