When you read the words of this song, the title makes more sense, reminding us of our humanity. "Illumination", composed by Michael McGlynn, from a tombstone from the 17th c.: Whoever it is that passes here Read this, stop, and weep I was as you are, and you shall be What I am now, pray for me

We celebrate the birth of Florence B. Price, who was a prolific composer whose music was never entered into the canon and was almost lost to history even though she was the first composer who was a Black woman to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. youtu.be/3qhS07P1tW4?...

For Women's History Month, we would like to introduce you a child prodigy who later fought for her music to be taken seriously, Maria Rosa Coccia (1759-1833) was a composer, teacher, and harpsichordist. She worked to convince everyone that women can write just as well as men youtu.be/BhVWdajgvq4?...

This multi sectional work was composed by Marianna von Martines, who was an accomplished composer. For a context of when she composed, she was a contemporary of W.A. Mozart and a student of J. Haydn. youtu.be/LEf6FNuQ7xU?...

Do you know this composer? As Alex Ross stated in The New Yorker 2018, "not only did Price fail to enter the canon; a large quantity of her music came perilously close to obliteration. [This instance is] a potent symbol of how a country can forget its cultural history." youtu.be/3qhS07P1tW4?...

In 2021, we presented a program on barriers to viewing the night sky. In addition to concert under stars, we hosted an online discussion w/ experts in science, environmental, & music fields exploring what keeps us from seeing stars. A great listen for International Day of Women & Girls in Science.

During rough times, music can ease or inspire. "It May Be" by Brian Jones is one of those songs that seems to do both, ending with: "One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." music.youtube.com/watch?v=jgX3...

Music as with all art can be a reflection of our times; however, this song was written almost a century ago. "Resignation" was composed by Florence Price, whose music had finally been getting the time it deserves in the spotlight. Listen and share. youtu.be/3qhS07P1tW4?...
