compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 09/08/2026@dectape.bsky.social and I were both quite pleased everything ran for the whole weekend - despite some fussing from one of the daybreaks that needed its backplane cleaned, and the hard disk in the Dolphin wanting to warm up for 20 minutes before reading reliably. 110
compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Here's a video I took of our setup form #vcfwest - 8000 Dandelion, two 6085 Daybreaks, 1100 Dolphin, Dicentra sitting on top, and finally the Alto. Thanks to everyone who stopped by - @dectape.bsky.social and I had a great show! 3233

compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Thanks! And your take is a good one. It's impressive how complete the whole Star package was in 1982! 010
compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 30/07/2026Thank! The 8000 will be running the services software, not the GUI. If we had a 2nd one I would put Star on it! 120
compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 27/07/2026Oops I was confused - we might not bring the Dorado. But the other systems will all be there! 040
compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 27/07/2026Anyone who mentions that will be forced to sit through the demo Jobs saw - we have the actual disk image used. 040
compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 27/07/2026Next weekend Josh and I will be giving a demo of Xerox systems at VCF West - every generation of computer hardware they sold form the Alto, to the Dorado, the Dolphin, Dandelion, and Daybreak. A rare chance to see the whole lineage in one place - working! 4556
compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 14/07/2026Here's the laser path on a 1981 Xerox 8040 Electronic Printer - the one sold with the Star office system. Note the helium neon laser - a modulator bends the beam. That's why there appear to be 2 beams in the photo. Light strikes the spinning polygon mirror causing it to scan. 050

compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 29/06/2026This machine is from ~1981, based on an optical copying machine introduced in the late 70s. Big helium neon laser, drive chain and belt, and clutches. 010

compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 22/06/2026Success!! Some parts were assembled out of order, and bent, preventing the registration rollers from gripping the page. 0123
compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 21/06/2026The printer design started out life as the model 3300 copier. The optical assembly on top was removed and a helium neon laser bolted in its place. 140
compu85 🌈 @compu85.bsky.social · 21/06/2026There are signs of life in the laser printer! Yes, it has a chain and 2 belts driven by a large synchronous motor. 140
