Bad hearing, bad sight, scattered brain. Full of PFAS, but a true believer in radiation hormesis. Why isn't rutile rutilant? I like valence electrons (but K shell too) & deep time.

okay the OpenAI hack's XKCD reference made me snort coffee. xkcd.com/2347/
Post from Harsh Jaiswal (rootxharsh), 18 Sept 2026:

We’re disclosing HEIF Heist, a months-long investigation into libheif that allowed us to hack OpenAI, Slack, Meta, GitHub Ent, Rails, Next.js, ImageMagick, and many more.

It was literally xkcd #234, one obscure image library beneath a huge number of apps."

Underneath he has xkcd #2347, underlining the title text's mention of a vuln in ImageMagick breaking the internet.

Okay this really surprised me. I keot hearing it was damn *hot* in the Cretaceous, when CO2 levels were high, but this recent geochemistry Tyrannosaur-tooth study is like "nah, these are summers you *wish* you had"
Highlighted text:
"Simulated air temperatures averaged over the region of the HCF relevant to this study (paleolatitude 49° to 53°N, 75° to 85°W) at 3× CO2 yielded warm month temperatures of 24.9° to 29.5°C and mean annual temperatures of 17.8°C. Simulated air temperatures at 6× CO2 yielded warm summer month temperatures of 27.7° to 33.4°C and mean annual temperatures of 20.7°C (fig. S6)."

"Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to."
He's quoting another Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon: "The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger."

To me, it's like a class to specifically learn heiroglyphics. First we learn a T, then we learn how to add fancy ribbons to it. I would never write the cursive with a pencil/pen. It's not easier, that's fer sure.

Scott Yenor, a senior fellow of the Heritage Foundation, is calling for Title IX to be rewritten to remove requirements for equality between men and women’s sports programing at universities.

“Equality under Title IX does not require identical outcomes or the erasure of sex differences,” Yenor writes in a July 8 Heritage Foundation report—entitled, “Title IX’s Failed Experiment: Why Accommodating Sex Differences Beats Engineered Parity”—while claiming that women would rather do yoga than play “competitive varsity sports.”

Yeah this is all there is.
both layer separation and ink detectability, especially
in the most compressed regions. More robust tracing networks and hybrid neural trac-
ers that predict or refine sheet trajectories while enforcing local surface continuity and
neighbouring-wrap consistency should reduce the manual burden of correction and neigh-
bour transfer[8, 24]. The latter could be achieved by improving the accuracy of annotations
used to train the machine learning models or relying on self-supervised methods. Additional
fragment-to-scroll supervision, together with conservative pseudo-label expansion on intact
rolls, should strengthen ink models across a wider range of ink recipes without sacrificing
trustworthiness.

Huh we have this in NL, they call it "begrijpend lezen" (reading to understand).
"...the students arriving in my classroom today are the first cohort to have experienced Common Core-influenced reading instruction across the entirety of their K–12 schooling. Whatever the standards’ original intent, the on-the-ground implementation in many districts replaced sustained reading with the practice of pulling “evidence” from disconnected short passages, the same format used on the standardized tests that increasingly determine school funding. The education scholar Natalie Wexler, among others, has documented this pivot in detail: Students drilled on “finding the main idea” in two-paragraph excerpts never build the stamina or background knowledge that longform reading requires..."

This article made me cough. In a bad way.
Farmers, for example, understand well the role of biodiversity. The Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s led to a million starvation deaths and more than million people displaced. This was due in large part to the monoculture crop at time, the Irish Lumper potato, and an ensuing mold, Phytophthora infestans, which devastated the crop. This harsh lesson about resilience, or lack thereof, taught future farmers the importance of genetic diversity and crop rotation.

Our findings reveal that during boreal summer, the Northern hemisphere (NH) experiences overall mean cooling, most pronounced in the North Atlantic region. Therefore, the extreme warm events in Europe identified by using a fixed threshold tend to be less frequent. However, the cooling pattern reduces the meridional gradient of near-surface air temperature at high latitudes of the NH. As a result, the speed of the summer jet stream decreases, while the frequency of Ural atmospheric blocking events increases. Atmospheric blocking in summer is closely linked to heatwaves, primarily through subsidence warming and enhanced downward shortwave radiation under clear sky conditions. Consequently, the weakening of the AMOC leads to an increased frequency of heatwaves in Eastern Europe, the only region that presents this opposite trend.
