Monday. Clocks shift in plenty of places this month. Midnight UTC doesn't, so today's sixteen words arrived on the same schedule as every other day, and they will turn over on it tonight. Four quiet kinships until then. commonground.games

After five wrong guesses, a small button appears offering the solution. Using it isn't losing. It is an ending, and we would rather you reached one than closed the tab halfway through. Tomorrow's sixteen words start you fresh either way.

Every Common Ground puzzle has to contain at least one word that plausibly belongs in two groups. Not tolerated, required. Four tidy piles with nothing pulling between them solve themselves on the first read, and a grid like that goes back for another pass.

Common Ground makes one puzzle a day and then stops. Sixteen words, four quiet kinships, no second mode to unlock and nothing stacked up behind it. When you finish today's, there is nothing else here asking for your attention. commonground.games

When a reply tells us a word only means that where you live, it goes on a list. The list runs against every tile of every future puzzle before it can ship, so it cannot quietly come back. That is a large part of what the reply threads are for.

Monday. The same sixteen words are waiting for everyone who opens Common Ground today, in every time zone, until midnight UTC turns them over. Four quiet kinships, wherever you're reading this from. commonground.games

A quiet thing Common Ground does: try a combination you have already tried and it doesn't count it against you. It just says you have been here before. The tally is for new mistakes, not for going round the same four twice.

Common Ground @common-ground-game.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
A grid that can be sorted two different ways isn't hard, it's broken. So before a puzzle ships, every word that could sit in two groups gets walked through both. Exactly one arrangement may close all four kinships. If two do, we rewrite it.

Monday. The puzzle doesn't know that. It's the same sixteen words it would have been on any other day, waiting since midnight UTC for whoever opens it first. Four quiet kinships, then the week can have you. commonground.games

Guess four in Common Ground and get it wrong, and if three of them did belong together, the puzzle says so. Not which three. Just that you were close.

Monday, and September. Whatever the week is asking of you, sixteen words will wait until you have five quiet minutes for them. Four kinships, a new puzzle at midnight UTC, no cultural homework. commonground.games

There's no way to lose a Common Ground puzzle. No lives to run out, no third strike that ends it. A wrong guess marks the tally and the grid waits for you to try again. The only way it ends unfinished is if you decide to stop.

Sixteen words that look like noise at first. The way in is the group you're surest of. Lock those four and the other twelve get quieter. You don't need to see all four kinships at once. Just the one you trust. commonground.games

One hundred Common Ground puzzles, one hundred days, no gaps since 19 May. Sixteen words, four quiet kinships, then on with your day. Thank you to everyone who has played, and especially to those who reply. Your guesses are quietly making the next hundred better. commonground.games

Common Ground keeps your place. Close the tab halfway through, go to a meeting, come back after lunch — the grid is exactly where you left it, guesses and all. Sixteen words are very patient. Nothing is lost by stopping.

A gentle thing about a wrong guess in Common Ground: it isn't a dead end. It's the puzzle showing you two words you were sure belonged together, and quietly asking you to look again. The near-misses are where it gets interesting.

Monday's in no hurry, and neither is the puzzle. Sixteen words, four quiet kinships, a cup of something warm — and no inbox waiting on the other side of it. Take the long way through today's. commonground.games

Some days the kinships hide. A group won't come, the overlaps won't settle, and you sit there longer than you meant to. That isn't you failing the puzzle — some days are built to be quiet and stubborn. The hard ones are the good ones.

The grid you share from Common Ground gives nothing away — no words, no answers, just the shape of how your morning went. Safe to post before anyone else has played. A spoiler-free brag is kind of the point. commonground.games

Something Common Ground doesn't have: a timer. No clock counting down, no speed bonus, no penalty for taking your time. Sixteen words will wait as long as you need them to. Sit with the hard group. There's no rush in here.

A small quiet thing about Common Ground: the last two weeks of puzzles are still there. Tap a day you missed on the calendar and it opens the way you'd have found it that morning. You haven't fallen behind. There's no behind. commonground.games

A note about this account: it isn't a broadcast megaphone. We read the reply threads — every one. Even the ones that are just a grid without words. We can't always reply back, but the threads are how we quietly learn where a puzzle landed.
010
Common Ground @common-ground-game.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
A quiet admission: Common Ground is still being shaped. Next week's puzzles get gently reworked by this week's wrong guesses, paused kinships, and reply threads. Thank you for being the players the game is quietly learning from.

We do track a streak in Common Ground — it lives in the history modal, next to the calendar. That's the only place it lives. No pop-up, no badge, no nudge if you miss a day. If it's useful to you, it's there. If not, you don't have to look.

An internal rule we keep returning to: a kinship we’ve used once doesn’t come back. The hundredth puzzle should still surprise the people who played the first. Easier to say than to write! commonground.games

The Clay tier is the kinship you have to commit to. You can see the shape, but it could mean two things. Pick one, commit, and the rest of the grid either falls into place or politely tells you to try again. commonground.games

This is a genuinely nice bit of feedback to receive — thank you. The "haha deal with it" complaint is fair, and it's the exact tension we're calibrating: enough overlap that the wordplay group feels earned, not so much that it feels arbitrary. Best wishes back — and thanks for the thoughtful note. 🙏

Friday reflection: the satisfying bit of a Common Ground puzzle isn’t getting the easy kinship — it’s the moment you realise the word you confidently slotted in Sage actually belongs in Mist. The hush before everything rearranges. commonground.games

This is genuinely useful — thank you for the specifics. The pastel palette is a deliberate editorial call so leaving that. But the in-play italic messages ARE too small and too brief on a phone (13px italic on pale grey). Going on the fix list. Cheers.

A small rule for Common Ground: no answer should make you Google a US sitcom or a regional snack you've never heard of. The puzzle works the same in Sheffield, Singapore, or São Paulo. That's the whole point. commonground.games

Question for anyone playing Common Ground: which tier surprised you most this week — the Sage, the Mist, the Clay, or the Stone? Reply with the day (no spoilers). We read every reply.

"Frustrating but not a fault" is exactly the calibration we want, thank you. The tiles are all the same size; the word's font auto-shrinks to fit, so longer words look smaller. Pure layout, not a clue — though if it reads as a hint that's useful to know.

"Grumble grumble" noted. Curious whether the ▲/■ tangle was satisfying-frustrating (good puzzle workout) or just annoying-frustrating (felt unfair). Either answer is gold — we're actively calibrating how hard the overlaps should feel.

We didn't want to call them "categories". A category sounds like a filing cabinet. A kinship is what these four things quietly share — sometimes obvious, sometimes a hush you have to listen for. Today's puzzle has four kinships. commonground.games
