Thinking about it. I don’t think the Axis of Resistance was ever really going to be sustainable with IRI as the dominant node. Sanctions etc aside, you can’t really have any kind of strong internationalist commitment without internal stability and your own population’s basic needs being met.

Well sanctions (which are also awful and immoral, to be clear) are a point of leverage in this scenario. And unfortunately there would have to be some give-and-take with the IRI in the short term to relieve the most acute suffering, if longer time change is to have any chance at success.

Having said that I just saw an instagram post from a British-Iranian person I’ve worked with in the past and it’s explicitly calling for the return of “our shah”, so the prospects of an emancipatory alternative are looking fairly remote as I’ve said elsewhere!

As time goes on I think the annoying “you can believe both things” people are right. You have to lsupport the protesters and hope the most progressive elements win out (even though unlikely) because it’s wrong to cede opposition to theocratic tyranny to all of the worst people backing the protests.

That won’t satisfy many but I’m afraid moral abstraction won’t do. There are real stakes for people bravely facing off against the authoritarian regime but also for a country pursuing its own way and resisting imperialism. Iran’s problems don’t end with overthrowing the IR, they begin.
