"THE MINDS OF MANTRACORA."
Creative Team: John Byrne, Glynis Wein, Jim Novak, Al Milgrom & Ann Nocenti.

On the Negative Zone world of Mantracora, the Mantracorans' spiritual leader Tarnith Gelstal judges a new "Chosen" couple and finds them worthy of taking their rightful place in the Brotherhood.

The couple joyfully accepts their selection and are led deep below Gelstal's massive castle.
Once there, as great doors open, they find something horrifying, but their brief screams are not heard by those celebrating above them.

Two days later, the Fantastic Four are riding a wagon incognito toward that same city as part of their continuing exploration of the Negative Zone.

Reed wants to check out a strange energy reading he has detected in the citadel, energies that are quite different from the general emissions of the planet.

As they approach, the Thing is not impressed with the outfit they have given him as a disguise, but Reed deems it necessary in order to mask their presence as much as possible.

However, their entry does not go unnoticed, as one of Taranith Gelstal's servants spots them and the sensors he wears on his face send scans of the newcomers to Tarnith Gelstal in the Keep who finds them to be of interest and instructs his servant to follow them cautiously and try to get a better look.

As his computers detect the massive intellect within the mind of Reed Richards, Taranith Gelstal thinks to himself that the alien is the final piece of the puzzle needed for his grand schemes.

Note:
The Fantastic Four have been in the Negative Zone for two months now, but only a few hours have passed on Earth.
The time differential was explained by Reed in Fantastic Four No. 251.

"TRAPPED!"
Creative Team: John Byrne, Glynis Wein, Jim Novak, Al Milgrom & Ann Nocenti.

On the island of Manhattan, Daredevil is swinging through the city when suddenly he slams into an invisible barrier that even his radar-sense could not detect.

However, thanks to his keen training and fast reflexes, he manages to save himself from a fatal fall some twelve stories down.

Going to investigate the barrier, Daredevil is able to find it by touch, but is shocked when his radar sense can detect nothing but thin air.

The cause of this barrier is Annihilus, ruler of the Negative Zone who has erected it using the equipment from within the Fantastic Four's Baxter Building headquarters.

Meanwhile, deep in the Negative Zone on the planet Mantracora, the Fantastic Four are horrified to find the alien they had known as Taranith Gelstal has drained the mind of their leader, Mister Fantastic, in order to use his mental energies to power his ship and escape the world on which he had been trapped for the last thirty years.

When the Fantastic Four try to attack their diminutive foe, the alien has a tactical advantage of being able to crawl all over the ship due to his unique physiology and, despite their best efforts, he is able to escape the chamber where he had drained the minds of all his victims!

Note:
Daredevil appears here between Daredevil No. 195 where he clashed with crooked mayoral employee Tarkington Brown and Daredevil No. 196 where he and Wolverine investigate the kidnapping of Bullseye from the hospital.

In this alternate universe, Carina shows no hesitation, giving Korvac the strength to kill the Avengers.

He then resurrects them as his pawns, tasking the more powerful members with fighting the cosmic beings assembling against him and the ESPers with monitoring their movements.

Korvac seals the universe off from other-dimensional
realms to prevent the gods from coming to avenge Thor and Hercules and to keep the likes of Dormammu, Mephisto and Immortus from interfering in his plans to bring universal order.

He then banishes Dr.Strange, Phoenix and the Silver Surfer from the universe to keep them out of the mix as well.

The Watcher gathers many of the Elders of the Universe and convinces some of them to fight against Korvac, but a couple of them have other ideas.

Grandmaster goes to Korvac to propose a contest of champions for his right to power, but Korvac kills him outright, claiming not to play games.

The Shaper of Worlds fares better by simply offering his reality-altering powers to serve Korvac's imagination.

Galactus and the Gardener head out in a ship to attack, but Korvac sends the Avengers on a suicide mission to stall them, crashing them on Mars.

He directs Captain America to use the stolen Ultimate Nullifier to sacrifice himself destroying Galactus!

In this issue of What If?, 2 Titanic Tales!
This is the cover art to What If No. 33 cover dated June 1982.
Cover art by JOHN ROMITA JR & BOB LAYTON.

The first story in this issue is titled: "What If Dazzler Had Become The Herald Of Galactus?"
Creative Team: Danny Fingeroth, Mike Vosburg, Jon D'Agostino, George Roussos, Diana Albers, Tom DeFalco & Mark Gruenwald.

Galactus decides against sparing Terrax for his rebellion and banishes him to the black hole, causing him to lose his axe in the process.

Galactus then makes Dazzler his new herald against her protests.
She submits only for the sake that Earth will be spared from his hunger.

As the cosmically-powered spaceways-skating Dazzler spends the ensuing centuries deliberately steering her master to worlds uninhabited by sentient life, she even manages to return a sense of sentimentality to him that comes out when he subtly rejects a world inhabited by sentient plants that she accidentally summoned him to.

When a group of aliens whose worlds were consumed by Galactus make use of the found axe of Terrax to make a cosmic weapon that nearly fatally injures Dazzler, Galactus reacts vengefully and wipes out the armada.

As Dazzler recovers, she's furious that he didn't find a better way to resolve the conflict and refuses to help him any more.

The second story is titled: "What If Iron Man Had Been Trapped in King Arthur's Time?

Continuing with a look at some of my favorite covers from the What If? series. This is the cover art to What If No. 36 cover dated December 1982. Cover art by JOHN BYRNE & TERRY AUSTIN. www.instagram.com/p/Da21INhTni...
The first story in this issue is titled: "What If The Fantastic Four Had Not Gained Their Powers?"
Creative Team: John Byrne, Bob Sharen, Joe Rosen, Mark Gruenwald & Michael Carlin.

In a world where Reed Richards decided to wait and do the rocket launch by the books with proper shielding, the mission is a success and the rocket group becomes a cornerstone of Earth's burgeoning space industry.

When the Mole Man's monsters attack, it's the army's job to investigate Monster Isle, but Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben opt to explore the tunnel created beneath their compound anyway.

Even without powers, the foursome's courage and ingenuity lead them to victory against the Mole Man all the same.

Thus begins the Fantastic Four's career as pulp adventurers.

The second story is titled: "What If Nova Had Not Given Up His Powers?"
Creative Team: Bill Mantlo, Mike Vosburg, Christie Scheele, Rick Parker, Mark Gruenwald & Michael Carlin.

After the events of Rom Spaceknight No. 24, Richard Rider decides he doesn't want to part with the Nova Force.

At first he resigns to living on Xandar despite his homesickness, but after about a year he hijacks a teleporter to return to Earth and fights against the Champions of Xandar when they pursue him.

It's only when his friends and family talk him down and point out how selfish he's being that Richard finally relents and relinquishes the Nova powers to Centurion.

Cover art by MICHAEL GOLDEN.

"What If Dr. Strange Had Never Become Master Of The Mystic Arts?"
Creative Team: Peter Gillis, Jackson Butch Guice, Sam Grainger, Christie Scheele, Diana Albers & Ralph Macchio.

The Watcher posits the question of what if Dr. Strange had never become Master of the Mystic Arts.

He revisits the origin of Dr. Strange in which he had been a talented but arrogant surgeon who sustained nerve damage in his hands and sought out the assistance of The Ancient One to cure him.

He decides to instead become The Ancient One’s disciple after helping warn him of Baron Mordo’s treacherous plot to smite him.

In an alternate version, Stephen Strange suffers the same fate but instead of becoming The Ancient One’s disciple, he instead passively observes The Ancient One’s teaching and returns home to teach after feeling enlightened.

Meanwhile, Baron Mordo moves into the Greenwich Village mansion that would have been used by Dr. Strange, despite a sense of unease from Wong.

Baron Mordo proceeds to battle the forces of evil over a number of months, eventually being summoned by The Ancient One to battle Dormammu.

He enters the Dark Dimension and encounters Clea who he forces to help him and eventually encounters Dormammu who he works with to battle the Mindless Ones.

Mordo’s aid forces Dormammu to abide by a vow that prevents him warring against Mordo and The Ancient One awards Mordo with the Cloak of Levitation traditionally worn by Dr. Strange.

Clea feels uneasy and seeks to probe why and is encountered by Umar, Dormammu’s sister, who helps guide her probe. Stephen has meanwhile been suffering sleepless nights due to recurring nightmares and is unable to get any help from modern medicine.

He then describes a different world in which Sub-Mariner takes a more southerly route through the ocean and misses the Eskimos and the block of ice containing Captain America.

The Avengers never recover Captain America from the ocean and therefore their membership ultimately consists only of Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man and Wasp.

Without Captain America's unifying spirit, they eventually decide to go their separate ways after a brief period of time together, much to the chagrin of Rick Jones.

Meanwhile, a mysterious man becomes incensed at the news of Richard Nixon's visit to China and apparent lack of commitment to the ideals of democracy.

He enters a chamber that contains two bodies in suspended animation, that of a man dressed as Captain America and another dressed as Bucky Barnes.

After activating some controls, the figures are brought back to life and they vow to fight the forces of tyranny.

The duo begin their crime-fighting efforts in earnest and battle common street thugs in addition to numerous other villains but are later seen in their apartment discussing their financial woes and revealing that they are not the original Captain America and Bucky!

The Watcher revisits the origin of the Hulk and how Banner saved Rick Jones from the Gamma Bomb explosion.

In an alternate reality, Bruce Banner takes slightly longer in his attempt to rescue Rick Jones and is unable to push him into the hole that shields him from the blast. In this reality, only his body shields Rick Jones and they both take a substantial dose of the gamma radiation!

Later, they’re both lying in beds being treated by doctors who are seeking to recommend halting all gamma research.
Rick Jones becomes aware that he can hear Banner’s thoughts.
Banner then transforms into the Hulk and smashes out of the infirmary.

Rick tells Army personnel that the Hulk took Bruce Banner instead of them being one and the same.
Meanwhile, Hulk seeks to get away from the noise and lights.
The Hulk wrecks a helicopter when it spots him and underestimates his strength.

General Thunderbolt Ross tries to seal all of the research to avoid a panic and focus his resources on capturing the Hulk. Additional military units are tossed away by the Hulk’s might and he smashes multiple tanks after Rick Jones is injected with medication by an inexperienced soldier and Hulk detects his pain through their psychic rapport.

Ross realizes that the Hulk is aware of pain inflicted on Rick Jones and uses that knowledge to inflict additional torment on Rick hoping to lure the Hulk back to the base.

Due to the torture and his radiation sickness, Rick Jones ultimately dies and Hulk goes berserk when he detects this, destroying numerous military helicopters and tanks in his quest to seek out Ross for revenge.

It was sciatica or chronic back and leg pain, that woke Ben Parker up and led to his fate in the mainstream universe.

However, in this alternate universe, his pain did not flare up, leading May to check the noise downstairs instead.
When she is killed by a Burglar, the burglar is then captured by Spider-Man. Ben stays home and is not taken to neighbors.

When he sees Peter running off after the police tell him about May, Ben assumes this is his way of dealing with the grief.

Seemingly, Ben has neither the financial nor health concerns that haunted May in the mainstream universe, but he and Peter are slightly distant to one another, since Peter was always closer to May.

However, Ben gains some insight from a visit by Peter's high school friends, which leads him to put a taunting Flash Thompson in his place.
Furthermore, it seems that while mainstream universe Peter was very careful about his comings and goings as Spider-Man, probably owing to May's health, he is a bit more careless here.

To further Ben's suspicions, Peter shows some pride at a newspaper article detailing how Spider-Man caught the Burglar who killed Aunt May.

In this issue of What If, the Watcher revisits the events that led to the freeing of Loki after having been imprisoned in a tree by Odin and the discovery of Mjolnir by Donald Blake and his return to his true persona of Thor.

In an alternate reality, Loki is freed sooner and uses his powers to visualize the locations of Thor and Mjolnir and discovers the lame Donald Blake and the stick he is meant to find during his trip to Norway.

Loki takes the stick and tosses it far beyond the cave so that Blake cannot find it during his attempt to hide from the Kronans.

Blake is unable to escape the cave or turn into Thor and is subsequently killed by the Kronans and Odin becomes distraught at the realization of his favored son’s death.

Odin gathers a group of warriors to go with him in a quest to beseech Hela to return his son but Balder and the Warriors Three feel that Odin’s methods are unsavory and choose not to participate.

When Odin asks Hela for his son and offers fair return, Hela slaps slaps his hand away and triggers his band of warriors to attack Hela and her defenders.

"LIFE'S BLOOD."
Creative Team: Howard Mackie, Javier Saltares, Mark Texeira, Gregory Wright, Michael Heisler & Bobbie Chase.

After a seven year absence from comics, the Ghost Rider returns in a new role as the Spirit of Vengeance.

The reemergence occurs on Halloween night in the Cypress Hills area of Brooklyn, New York.

The new beginning of the Ghost Rider in Marvel Comics starts with Barbara Ketch dragging her younger brother, Daniel into the Cypress Hills Cemetery to visit Harry Houdini's grave.

Daniel continues to try and talk Barbara out of the excursion as he follows along with the camera bags. Cypress Hills is known for its cemeteries, this cemetery.

This is one of the most notorious for tales of witchcraft, cults and religious fanatics; child abductions have been attributed to all the above.

One year previous, five kids from Ridgewood disappeared here and Daniel is, rightfully, scared.

Ignoring Daniel's pleas, Barbara insists on seeing the psychics attempt to contact the magician, Houdini, from beyond the grave-with pictures for proof.

While walking through the graves, a group of masked teenagers calling themselves the Cypress Pool Jokers jump from behind the tombstones and scare Barb and Danny.

After making fun of Danny and the fact he almost jumped out of his skin because of silly masks, they attempt to steal the camera bag strapped over his shoulder, but Barb is too quick for them and fights off the teens.

Having traveled to China to rescue Michael O'Brien from the Mandarin, who believed O'Brien to be Iron Man, Tony Stark now orders O'Brien to return to the States aboard an Avengers Quinjet.

O'Brien does so, thinking how wrong he was in his earlier assumption that Stark was a villain.
Iron Man then invades the Mandarin's castle lair.

He encounters and defeats his Death-Squad and eventually confronts the Mandarin himself.
The villain freezes Iron Man with his rings and explains how he survived his apparent death at the hands of the Yellow Claw in an earlier battle.

The Mandarin transferred his consciousness into his rings and when the Claw's servant Loc Do placed the rings on his hands, the Mandarin took over his form.

Iron Man turns on his heat inducer and thaws his frozen body.
He eventually defeats the Mandarin by seizing his rings and de-magnetizing them.

In a last act, the Mandarin remotely assassinates his agent, Jonathan Rich, in Washington D.C. for failing him.

Iron Man destroys the Mandarin's machinery, as well as his castle but spares the villain's life.

Iron Man has defeated the Mechanoids but is confronted by Midas himself.

Midas encases him and his allies in gold with his Abe Klein-designed golden touch.
Gloating, Midas, who extorted Abe Klein's cooperation by implying he would reunite him with his lost wife and daughter, callously tells him his family is dead.

Jack of Hearts' powers counteract the golden touch and inadvertently knocks over Iron Man, whose armor only has been transmuted.

Tony is able to free himself. With his armor destroyed, he dons replacement components from the Mechanoids.

Although Midas quickly defeats Jack of Hearts, Iron Man puts up a better fight. When Klein rebels, Midas strikes him down with a killing blow.

Suddenly, Marianne Rodgers interrupts the battle, lashing out at Iron Man with her mental powers, but strikes Midas instead, rendering him comatose.

After hearing Klein's dying words, Iron Man escorts Marianne, who has retreated further into madness, from the scene.

When the "egg" again activates, it opens a portal, Iron Man and Jack of Hearts enter.
