During Sunshine Week, a nonpartisan collaboration to shine a light on the importance of public records and open government, we thought we’d quiz you on your knowledge of that trend in our own state. Can you answer these three questions on actual incidents involving Colorado Sun reporters?

The Colorado Sun is your newsroom. From our reporters to our editors to our columnists, we all work hard for you. As reporter Jennifer Brown said, “We want to know your story.” 👇
A Colorado Sun reader who is a mom taking care of two children with disabilities reached out to me.

While the federal government is slashing Medicaid, and Gov. Jared Polis is saying that the state-federal program is gobbling up the state budget, this mom just wanted to talk about what these cuts are going to mean for her family. Parents caring for kids with severe disabilities live with little sleep, few breaks from the stress, and a near-constant fear of what will happen to their adult kids when they die.

This mother’s story was a moving account of how government policies affect real people. And it’s how a lot of stories at The Sun begin — with a reader sending an email or picking up the phone. We’d rather hear about it from you than through a government agency’s news release.

We want to know your story. We want to hear your requests about stories you want us to look into. That’s because we report to you, not any corporate media company or bosses in another state.

The Colorado Sun is your newsroom. From our reporters to our editors to our columnists, we all work hard for you. As reporter and cofounder Jason Blevins said, “Hit us with a hot tip and we sweep the schedule and get busy.” 👇
This was a busy week with election news and a full roster of stories for Outsider readers. Then came an email from a reader that quickly swept my desk clear. It looks like a nearly 10-year plan to transfer one of the Colorado State Land Board’s most valued parcels is on the ropes, a little more than a week before the board was planning a final vote on the land sale.

Reporters here at The Sun work for readers like the person who sent that email. We report for you. Hit us with a hot tip and we sweep the schedule and get busy.

The Colorado Sun is not ours. It’s yours.

In the end, Elser's charges were dropped. But a bigger question remains. How are Flock cameras being used by cities and are they a threat to our privacy?

Elser was able to prove her own innocence but it took a lot of footwork. All of this was to prove she was not the person who stole a package worth less than $25 from a Bow Mar porch. 3/3

Faced with proving her own innocence, Elser decided to apply her own electronic surveillance to the case. Elser had to gather enough files to counter what law enforcement said was definitive proof based on Flock cameras in the town of Bow Mar and a Ring doorbell camera from a porch. 2/3
