Now #reading: Ulysses, 2 eds: Cambridge monster annotating the 1922 text with terrific chapter introductions, maps, anything you could want; the 1960 text in a Penguin. The scholarly experience and the reading-for-pleasure experience. Also enjoying these lectures: www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

#reading The Odyssey (Homer trans. Daniel Mandelsohn, 2025) Well-crafted (might be turgid compared to some) translation featuring novel and defensible choices, as well as a very good introduction and copious notes. Beautiful cover! Fun lecture on translation challenges: youtube.com/watch?v=ER92...

#Reading Stephen Markley – The Deluge (2023) Passionate and plausible novel of near-future climate change upheaval. Slightly dated given its publication date, but meticulously imagined in both political and personal dimensions. This generation's The Jungle or even Uncle Tom’s Cabin? One can hope

Now #reading: American Midnight (Adam Hochschild, 2023) AH again lifts a historical rock, revealing forgotten creepy-crawlies with modern resonance – this time, civil-liberties violations and horrific violence against socialists and minorities during WWI and after www.youtube.com/live/XyAZQG9...

Now #reading: Berg (Bryan R. Simms & Charlotte Erwin, 2021) Very good mono/biograph of the loveliest Second Viennese, detailing barely-sublimated trauma and neurosis as well as lots of theory and musical examples – most useful in dissecting the operas' structures www.nybooks.com/articles/202...

Travesties (Tom Stoppard, 1974) Typically fizzy #reading; I was prepared for delightfully arch cleverness involving Joyce/Tzara/Lenin's careers, but not for most of the play recapitulating The Importance of Being Earnest, so reviewing same (1952 and 2002 films) very helpful in appreciating the gags

Now #reading Poetry of the First World War (ed. Tim Kendall, 2013) Plenty of information alongside the selections. A nice companion is the Pat Barker novel Regeneration or the 1997 film adaptation, featuring Sassoon and Owen. The anthology ends with songs, which helps alleviate the grimness

Now #reading: The Great Swindle (Pierre Lemaitre trans. Frank Wynne, 2015) Gripping yarn of demobbed WWI soldiers struggling to survive and avoid the predations of bureaucracy and elites; adapted as a film in 2017 titled (in English) See You Up There

Now #reading: The Magic Mountain (Thomas Mann trans. John E Woods, 2005) The Master of Contradictions: Thomas Mann and the Making of The Magic Mountain (Morten Høi Jensen, 2025) Mann doesn't get enough credit for being a very funny satirical writer! Jensen brings excellent context and history

Christopher Clark (undisputed English-language master of all things Prussian) on Wilhelm II in the LRB, 2015 www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v3...
'In the third and final volume of John Röhl’s immense biography of Wilhelm II, the Kaiser’s voice is the thread that holds the text together. On page after page, he cajoles, whines, demands, vociferates and babbles, bombarding his interlocutors (and the reader) with fantastical geopolitical speculations, crackpot plans, sarcastic asides and off-colour jokes. Reading Wilhelm II on every conceivable subject for more than 1200 pages (3000 if you read the three volumes in sequence) is like listening for days on end to a dog barking inside a locked car. And the effect is heightened by the fact that this volume is focused more narrowly on the monarch than its predecessors – there are fewer excursions into the worlds of the rest of the imperial elite and fewer pen-portraits of friends and associates.'

The Essential Rilke (Trans. Galway Kinnell and Hannah Liebmann, 1999) Reading Rilke: Reflections on the Problems of Translation (William H. Gass, 1999) Gass is one of the best essayists to ever live and Rilke was an obsession; this is a delight. (Gass was not in time to critique Kinnell's work.)

The Children of Men (PD James, 1992) Backlisted (www.backlisted.fm/episodes/209...) despises the film in favor of the book; I consider the film a 21st century classic. The book is concerned with Englishness, finely wrought arch dialogue, and is very different from the film, and excellent

Catching up on recent #reading: Permutation City (Greg Egan, 1994) - incredible hard SF classic, filled with extraordinary ideas and prescient Combined with a reread of The Fire Upon the Deep (Vernor Vinge, 1994) – another classic, though as it goes on it progressively (and literally) drags

Now #reading: The Fall of Paris: The Siege and the Commune 1870–71 (Alistair Horne, 1990) Sizzling prose, with extraordinary details like Bismarck enjoying Prussian army lampooned in Offenbach operetta (youtube.com/watch?v=Lgiu...) at Paris’ 1867 exhibition, knowing he was likely to invade soon
