Finally, here’s a long-form feature about traveling my hometown of Bismarck, North Dakota (and its one-hour-away neighbor, Hebron) where independent movie houses—and the characters who operate them—defy corporatization for moviegoing experiences unlike any other (5/5) www.salon.com/2025/12/18/n...

Not the last picture show: A small-town theater brings hope to the heartland
So it turns out you can go home again — and what I found in two North Dakota movie theaters was marvelous

There’s no shortage of pop star pictures in theaters lately, but Mother Mary may be the strangest, most fascinating in quite some time. I wrote about the film’s story of estranged friendship, and the ghosts we only see in our dreams. (4/5) www.salon.com/2026/04/24/t...

The divine lessons of "Mother Mary"
In David Lowery's haunting quasi-ghost story, Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel initiate a biblical reconciliation.

If you’ve been curious about the new animated adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, don’t bother—the story of why it’s distributor, Angel Studios, would want to make a foray into the Hollywood elite they claim to decry is a far more dystopian tale. (3/5) www.salon.com/2026/05/03/s....

Something's off about "Animal Farm"
Distributed by the studio behind "Sound of Freedom," this take on George Orwell's classic is uniquely insidious.

My work seeks to make sense of our chaotic world and our equally complex emotions through film. It’s funny, insightful, unexpected, and challenging, in ways you won’t get anywhere else. Here are a few samples—a delicious aperitif, if you will—starting with a pair about The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2/5)
An article by Coleman Spilde about “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” entitled, “‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ weighs the cost of fighting for our passions,” with a photo of Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Stanley TucciAn article by Coleman Spilde about “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” entitled, “The ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ wake-up call,” with a photo Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci

A thing we're launching at @salon.com is a weekly art-over-algorithm newsletter on culture and entertainment that isn't decoding the latest trends but rather looking closely at stuff that's (hopefully) built to last. It's called The Swell, it's free, and it starts next week. www.salon.com/newsletter

ahead of opening night at #nyff, i wrote about ‘after the hunt,’ a mercurial and cruel provocation that tests its audience’s wits and questions the modern desire to define heroes from villains in a ceaseless search for answers. i absolutely loved it. www.salon.com/2025/09/25/a...

“After the Hunt” is a slippery study of our desire to wield power
In Luca Guadagnino’s timely drama, Julia Roberts is out for millennial blood at a steep cost.

Chloë Sevigny and Lily McInerny star in "Bonjour Tristesse," a lush, haunting remake from Durga Chew-Bose. In an interview with Salon's @colemanjspilde.bsky.social, the stars open up about fleeting beauty, aging, creativity and the ache of feelings we can’t quite name. www.salon.com/2025/05/02/i...

how remarkable that you can go to a movie theater and see a fascinating, bracing, unusual film by perhaps our greatest living filmmaker. an invitation to think and feel (and laugh! maybe even cry) and the cost is only the price of admission. run don’t walk etc

david cronenberg has a very singular, special way of addressing the humor in our mortality and the deeply ironic pain of living and losing. wrestled with that for my review of ‘the shrouds,’ his prickly, agonizing, and hilarious latest. www.salon.com/2025/04/19/w...

With "The Shrouds," cinema's great body horror auteur goes for something a little lighter: grief
Perhaps the greatest living filmmaker, Cronenberg's latest — a flawed, dynamic look at loss – doesn't disappoint.

it’s almost like journalism has long since been overtaken by a media industry centering the perspectives of the establishment as the default for ‘neutrality’ & any deviation from that ruse gets you fired & shunned. even if you do speak up you can only go so far within their ‘decorum’ boundaries.

scraped my soul to write about david lynch’s radically empathetic filmmaking by examining my favorite recurring image in his work: the long road in the dead of night. would mean a lot to me if you read it. i’m so grateful to have the platform to share it. www.salon.com/2025/01/25/d...

‘wicked’ manages to be both fun and insightful without veering into storytelling that’s corny or preachy. it smartly dissects who has power and how it’s wielded, with a fantastic comedic turn from ariana grande and a solid emotional center in cynthia erivo www.salon.com/2024/11/19/w...

‘wicked’ has its shortcomings (that consistently baffling lighting design!) but entertainment value isn’t one of them. it’s a bewitching, timely holiday movie spectacle, made with plucky earnestness that’ll charm fans and newcomers alike. my review for salon: www.salon.com/2024/11/19/w...
