The producer behind some of the most important records of the past four decades began studio life carrying cups of tea. Mark Ellis was a junior staffer at Morgan Studios in 1978 when producer Chris Tsangarides, watching one runner keep the tea coming while the other vanished, named the pair "Flood" and "Drought." The nickname stayed with the man who kept coming back with the cups and spoons.

Jean-Marc Lederman has had a charmed career. He started in Brussels punk with Streets (which later became Contingent), and found his instrument in Digital Dance, the new wave band that covered Kraftwerk and opened for Joy Division at Plan K. A stint in Fad Gadget's first touring band followed. The London years brought a role in The The's Marquee residency with Matt Johnson and Jim Thirlwell and midnight jams at…

Plenty of engineers have a room named after them. Eric Radcliffe has an album. Yazoo called their debut Upstairs at Eric's, in reference to the space at Blackwing where they recorded, and the credits for E.C. Radcliffe run through Mute Records' first five years the way a house style runs through a magazine. On Fad Gadget's "Ricky's Hand," his engineering credit even arrives stamped "M.Sc.D.I.C." - as if the control room were a university department.

Lee Margot writes and sings. Michal Laudarg builds the music and mixes it.

Dave "The Keys" Baker returns with another track from his lonelyklown project. "It's just another love song," intones the vocodered voice, but when Baker creates one it doesn't just end up on the pile. Classic electronic sounds layer with intent, while the minor key lines stroke your nerves like melodic AMSR.

Track of the Day (15 August 2026)

Portion Control emerged from a South London catering college armed with synthesisers, drum machines, and shocking visuals, instead of spatulas, scales, and whisks. Rather than riffs on French sauces, they created experimental and aggressive music that served as one of the main sources for the emerging electro-industrial and electronic body music (EBM) genres. Tracks like "Refugee," "The Great Divide," and "Under the Skin" delivered pointed, hardened electronics with shouted vocals, providing the template for bands like Nitzer Ebb, and inspiring Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly.

Steve Hillage has made a career finding the spaces within beats and turning rhythms into textures that envelop the listener. As a member of Gong, he was key to the development of progressive rock in the UK, but his solo works and third party productions have revealed a distinctive talent for pop, dub, techno, Goa trance, and world music. Blending styles and applying his techniques as a guitarist have yielded sounds as diverse as Simple Minds' "Love Song" and The Orb's "Blue Room."

Peter Fitzpatrick has spent two decades as Circuit3, making melodic, retro-futurist synthpop indebted to Kraftwerk, Eno and the early Human League. Metanoia: Music From Therapy breaks from that pattern. Eight largely wordless instrumentals, built on a conversation about trauma, closing with an eleven-minute duet with Vince Clarke - it must be a Mortality Tables product. The idea started in a pub.

"Too Much" opens on a tight, mechanical bassline that immediately sets a brisk tempo. Crisp drum sequencing drives the rhythm forward, framed by cold synth textures and sharp electronic accents. Pavar delivers a composed vocal character, gliding over shimmering waveforms while maintaining a subtle dark edge beneath the polished surface. The arrangement stays strictly pared down to maintain momentum from start to finish.

Some songs pick a side and stay there. "Bats in Paris" sides with the darkness and never blinks. Opening with Dina Summer's spoken verses laid flat over a drum machine that doesn't so much build as insist, the track channels the electroclash of The Hacker with hints of Italo and EBM. Local Suicide and Kalipo have spent a few years refining this particular contradiction, and here it locks into place with unusual precision.

Mein Herren und Damen. Aus Schweden. Conny Olivetti's Electric Machine Music 2. This album was released during the Pandemic. Olivetti says that this version is an improvement on the original, so we have approached it kalt. If Ridley Scott can rework and refine Blade Runner, then why not culture workers? The lead track is a collage of Kraftwerk-esque sounds that grounds the theme.

Sinan Revell is best known as the voice of SPK’s most successful single, “Metal Dance.” She cowrote it with Graeme Revell as part of the band’s shift from the industrial…

Shine On: Bruce Gilbert Bruce Gilbert approaches music as material. A guitar can provide structure, but so can a tape loop, a repeated word, a contact microphone or the sound…

The first track to get an outing from Waterflower's forthcoming album, Digiplantcore, "Honesty" comes with a smashing video. Aaron Funk made a name for himself with glitches and dreads. Sabine Moore has outdone him with thunderous crashes and mushrooms. Sometimes, what the dancefloor needs is a reason to fuse with phyto-rhythms and dabble in chlorophyll.

Sweden's Ankomst return with a statement about AI-generated music. "AI Disillusion" leaves no doubt about their position on the subject, but there is some room for discussion about what is "art" when made with machines. We don't have all the answers, but there is clearly something wrong about people using these tools to harvest the cultural heritage of humanity to create new products. Join the debate.

William Orbit has died, aged 69. He passed away at home on 23 July 2026, his family and friends confirmed. No cause of death has been disclosed. There are producers who make records sound expensive, and producers who alter the air around them. Orbit belonged firmly to the latter group. His work changed the emotional temperature of electronic pop. It made space for silence, suspension, grain, afterglow and doubt.

Track of the Day (7 August 2026)

Jimmy Monell has spent much of his career making other people sound more certain of themselves. His credits move between bright Swedish pop, electronic rock, remixes, live production and the harder edge of EBM. The instruments might change, but his concern with rhythm does not. Monell first reached a wide audience as one half of Adel & Shootingstar with Adel Dahdal, producing and recording The Sounds’ debut album, …

Yi Jing (意境): Hopium - Ruin to Dawn is a spoken-word record built on grief, self-division, and the faint pressure of return. It does not move like a conventional album. It moves like a sequence of interior scenes, short and severe, held together by voice and atmosphere. Fifi Rong has been working in this territory for a while. She is a Chinese-British vocalist, songwriter, and producer whose catalogue has long folded bilingual writing, emotional exposure, and hybrid electronic production into the same frame.

Nao Katafuchi has been moving through minimal synth, coldwave, and darkwave for years; certainly, long enough that Lonely Fire arrives with some history behind it. Born in suburban Tokyo, later based in New York, and then established in Germany from 2015 onward, he came out of the synth underground before establishing his solo catalogue with the Yumegoto EP, the full-length…

NINA x Radio Wolf’s latest album, Jukebox Dream Vol. 1, plays like a midnight cinema reel: neon romance, bad dreams, and cosmic highways stitched into one continuous reverie. It’s a collaboration that finally brings their long-running partnership into full-frame resolution. NINA came up through the synthwave and retro-pop circuits, carving out a reputation for weightless melodies over melancholy, fluorescent production.
