They have a “motorists forum”. But no mention of engagement with active travel groups

I mean, if I commuted from 80 miles away daily for 40 years I'd probably hate London as well, but even with the madness of living that far from work it depends where you are. You can get to Oxford Circus from Peterborough to Oxford Circus is just over an hour Portsmouth/Salisbury is more like 2

Are you sure?

Traffic counts here. Volumes appear slightly lower since 2020 LTNish schemes in Brixton and Dulwich. 2018 was last dft manual count

The drawings are described as “simplified designs” for a “design survey” rather than final. On Acre Lane they’re more clearly raised entry treatments. (Though these things have a habit of suddenly shifting to finalised and too late to change details)

For sure. But there *is* a protected lane on Rosendale Road (next street over) though that is no help for those starting or ending their trip on Croxted.

Bus priority scheme in Lambeth includes new informal crossings with central islands. As a pedestrian I think these should be zebras which actually give clear priority As a cyclist these create scary pinch points with drivers trying to overtake and cut back in.

This is the proposed new crossing linking a quiet street and a road that’s filtered to motor vehicles across Acre Lane (>10k vpd) It looks overcomplicated to me (long wait times?). How could this be simpler?

But here, when pedestrianisation of Beak Street was proposed the society's position was to oppose it. Number plate recognition so residents could continue to drive as now, no further pedestrianisation.

This is what I've always found bizarre about the Soho Society - they often seem to claim they want to 'preserve Soho's character' but the area has massively gentrified in the time they've been operating, and they surely have had much do with that. But now...

While we're looking at S bush - how would you create any useful east west routes for cycling here that are separate from the bus network. Where would you put cyclists if NOT on Goldhawk/Uxbridge/King Street? (there are buses on the roads with red lines too) Can you draw your cycle network here?

In theory you have Lower Marsh but that's impassable from much of each day because of the market (it might only operate from 11-3 but theres set up and breakdown with all the vehicles that needs.

The other serious collision I had was at Lambeth North, where a car overtook and left hooked me as we left the stop line. Now addressed with an advance release cycle box. Again, how would you separate cycle network from bus network here? This is where the Quietway route (Q now C5) rejoins.

It was nearly 20 years ago on Wood Lane. I got a lot more interested in cycle infra after that. Protected cycleway now being installed with BSBs (which would have prevented). I can't see where you'd separate cycle routes from Buses here given key destinations on Wood Lane and need to cross Westway

Can you explain the driver assistance system you’re talking about? And colour me dubious. We’ve not even managed to implement speed limiters on London buses yet. The human problem is attitude, as with drivers of other vehicles. Training doesn’t remove tired, angry, aggressive driver behaviour.

And surely the biggest impact on private car use in the Livingston era was the introduction of the congestion charge?

Data please. You say you're using TFL transport in London. Car use London wide has been remarkably resilient across the whole period (but London wide is not especially useful because in neither period have changes been universally applied - it varies greatly by borough)

So this graph is your source? Post covid - at which point we finally got more of a network - still seems to point to something different.

Back street routes are great if you're not in a hurry and you know the route. I use them frequently. But they do not work well if you're going somewhere new. I'll say it again, as a visitor I find cycling in Hackney disorientating - the routes don't take you to destinations (which are on main roads)
110
It's Simon, yeah? @coldwarcliff.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
I'll take you up on that but maybe you should come south as well. Lambeth and Southwark LTN coverage had massively increased but we have (some) direct main road cycleways too. There are vast and varied flows here now too. But back st. routes are complex and indirect - obvious from maps.

The post 2010 cycle strategy in London is growing cycling (both in terms of trips and mode share) and the big bang of Covid era infrastructure + LTNs has pointed the growth line up again.
020
It's Simon, yeah? @coldwarcliff.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Same goes for safety - data I've seen suggests you're wrong Also - TfL's 'quality' network is sparse so while cycling is growing much of it will still be on roads withno protection or traffic reduction And there are external factors (such as increased mobile phone use at wheel) adding to danger.
010
It's Simon, yeah? @coldwarcliff.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Your post seems factually incorrect -both the cycling trip and the mode share data seem to show faster growth post 2010, accelerating after the big bang of Covid infrastructure, with car mode share falling.

People who oppose creation of a Dutch style cycle network (main roads cycleways + LTNs) usually have some attractively simple sounding alternative that doesn’t stand up to any real world scrutiny. - Just do routes to school - Separate cycling from bus routes - Put routes in quiet back streets

A map of London bus routes. How do you make a viable cycling network that is separate from this?

Can you also show me your data that says cycling has been growing a slower rate and how you've stripped out other effects (transport fares and motoring costs relative to each other and to inflation)

Looking at the stuff on their map in the south of the borough Chelsea Bridge Road has a painted lane and no parking enforcement (it's supposed to be no loading or waiting) Oakley St (north of Albert Bridge) looks like this....

RBKC councillor on X trying to claim the borough has built "hundreds of [cycle] tracks and lanes". Yet the @safecycleldn.bsky.social map shows nothing in the borough. The stuff in pink was minimal intervention and they cancelled it in any case... lastnotlost.wordpress.com/tag/quietway/

Pretty much the entirety of the route (red line) was either on Cycleway or through LTNs. Much of this has been built since 2020. Almost none of it existed 15 years ago. Theres no way I'd have taken them before that. (and the sketchiest part of the lot was Westferry Road where no Thames path)

Whilst blaming the person who’s done more to get action on bus danger for that danger. But then he’s a complete clown

And confirmation that blocked pavements aren’t all down to riders. We parked these neatly in a motorbike parking bay (1mb, loads of space) and came back to find the mb gone and Forest in a heap blocking pavement. 1 broken as a result.

Forest bike review. The 9.99 day pass is a great way to spend a day in London. We rode 24 miles with visiting nephew today, using 184mins of our 1440! Just over 5p a minute. The bike itself? Doesn’t have the very fast acceleration of Lime but has a lot of over run (power after you stop pedalling

Sometimes you wonder. Porsche has been crashed. SUV has clearly been driven a long way on a flat front tyre, tyres on trailer are flat.

What do you think the problem is and how would you #FreeTheBus ? That route runs through the boroughs of Hammersmith, RBKC and Westminster. If that route is slowing the problem can only be too many motor vehicles - it barely even crosses a cycleway.

TFLs map shows C/Q5 on Clapham Common which was never designated nor any work done to widen/improve the proposed shared paths. While this section of LCN 25 must surely meet C criteria yet has never been C signed (and LCN signage is fading/incomplete/wrong)
000
It's Simon, yeah? @coldwarcliff.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Also, TfL map still shows C5 across Clapham Common which has never been designated nor the paths upgraded. Yet they still haven't made LCN 25, which for this section exists, with safe crossings into a C route (and it's LCN era signage is fading/incomplete)
020
It's Simon, yeah? @coldwarcliff.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
There are definitely sections being marked either side of a dangerous crossing - eg C48 is either side of Herne Hill but no provision to get *through* it. And the link in central Brixton is highly dubious (turn into a bus lane that becomes general traffic before the left turn, on the A23)

All the more absurd given how much space there is for protected tracks between Chelsea and Battersea bridges.

Another one - NCN Route 4. Pretty certain that this is correctly marked as pavement shared use, that there have never actually been any markings.

Also see Albert Gate where the signalised crossing lines up with the narrow gate cyclists are supposed to use.

Name and age match (which is not definitive) but it looks like someone jailed and banned for 5 years for killing a cyclist while driving at 70mph in a 30 limit in 2016 has left another cyclist for dead. People who drive with this level of recklessness should never be allowed to drive again.

Hopefully next they’ll move onto the South West corner where not a single one of these movements is obvious or without conflict between cyclists and pedestrians.

It's Simon, yeah? @coldwarcliff.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
Looks like the Royal Parks are finally, after >6 years, going to open the gate at the south end of the Park Lane cycle way so cyclists and pedestrians don’t have to squeeze through the narrow ped gate. (And bypass the stupid shared space crossing to Hyde Park Corner as well)
