Gain-of-function research (GoF research or GoFR) is medical research that genetically alters an organism in a way that may enhance the biological functions of gene products. This may include an altered pathogenesis, transmissibility, or host range, i.e., the types of hosts that a microorganism can infect. This research is intended to reveal targets to better predict emerging infectious diseases and to develop vaccines and therapeutics. Pretty classic "balanced" take I'd say. I have some issues with him on costs and saying that nuclear can't load follow, but more importantly he doesn't mention the elephant in the room: sheer quantity.
In many industrialised countries there's simply not enough possible renewable energy to get. As the video explains, our energy demands are only going up. Now because of data centers, in a few years it's something else. You might not like it, but that's a simple fact.
Of course, 100% RE advocates know this and therefore call for energy austerity. They *like* it when industry moves elsewhere (preferably nowhere). The immense drop in living standards is something they'll take for granted, or (more often) don't actually think through.
I agree with him on the speed argument, which is why I also call for solar and wind. My argument is to use variable renewables as a (hugely expensive) stop gap measure to be able to build enough nuclear in the long term.
