Game design is really unhinged sometimes
A (purposefully) confusing image showing a bunch of dice and arrows pointing at a giant piece of sashimi. The numbers on the dice are halved when the arrow is pointing at salmon roe and doubled when pointing at wasabi. The total of the sashimi numbers is written in the paper lamp on the right of the image.

I wasn't planning on doing the Indie Night Market, but when there was an open table, how could I not? It was a wonderful event and my only regret is not being able to make it to the other tables!

Convention planning via 3D modeling is pretty fun. I think we'll be doing up a booth something like this at PAX Unplugged

Hi Robert,

I came across your experience at Coin Flip Games, and was really impressed. We’re currently hiring for a Staff Software Engineer role at New Organization, and I believe your background would be a strong match.

Would you be open to a quick chat sometime this week to explore the opportunity?

Best,

This is a little known rule, but here at @urbanprogames.bsky.social we have a dress code for playing our games. This was at the Legislative Game Night hosted by Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs and the Tabletop Game Association.

And finally... December! We got into PAX Rising and rallied our friends to help out at the booth. We were so grateful and blown away by the response. Chicken Fried Dice had a great showing and Trickadee even got a little boost just by proxy.

Also by this point I was prepping for the Trickadee Kickstarter. It was a mad dash to get the campaign ready before November. I had to drop some planned add-ons just from a lack of being able to actually deliver on them.

Right around this time, Ashwin also pitches the wildest idea for Chicken Fried Dice to make the boards modular. I had been in the habit of shutting down component changes at this point so we could wrap up the game more quickly, but it was a brilliant idea. We had to go for it!

Late summer was all about prepping for PAX Unplugged in December. We applied and were really banking on getting into PAX Rising. Though we wouldn't find out until October that we were selected. Meanwhile, we were getting more and more artwork from the wonderful Meimo.

July was a blast from the past! Not only a retro game, but one I had signed to Talon Strikes back in 2019. It was Mix Tape, but due to some trademark issues, is now Cassette Crush. The Kickstarter was a success and it was fun to follow along without having to do the work like with nook.

Origins was a lot of things, but it was our first time exhibiting as Urban Professional Games and showing off Chicken Fried Dice in a big, public way. @boardgameghee.bsky.social crushed it at the booth. I also got more involved with the Building the Game podcast community. Such amazing folks

May was also the beginning of Trickadee! It started from the guts of a very different bird themed game I was working on with Aaron Mesburne and quickly deviated into something completely new. I did the artwork for the original version, but was unhappy with it. I'm so glad I found Kelsey King.

By May, we had decided on an art direction for Chicken Fried Dice and solidified the name/brand for publishing it. Urban Professional Games earned a nice little raccoon mascot drawn by myself. We were deep into planning a booth at Origins to demo the game at this point as well.

By this point, 2 giant boxes of nook arrived. I learned very rapidly some lessons on shipping and fulfillment. Mostly that stuffing 150 envelopes is about as many as I'd want to do myself. Got all the orders out though!

Chicken Fried Dice continued to evolve pretty dramatically throughout 2024. #Unpub validated one of the best parts of the game with real time dice drafting. We were still taking turns pulling dice from cool little shopping carts before this.

Also in January was #OrcaCon! @boardgameghee.bsky.social and I decided to publish Chicken Fried Dice ourselves late in 2023. We were fresh off #PAXU and had made some updates to the game. I think we felt it was "close" at this point, but we had little idea just how much more work there was to go

I started the year by launching a #make100 Kickstarter for nook. I had decided to do this fairly late in December and threw together a Kickstarter page mostly following in the footsteps of @zeruagames.bsky.social. Launch Tabletop was a huge asset for this small of a campaign.

PAX Unplugged was just incredible. Now the post-con blues can set in. I had such an amazing time in the PAX Rising booth showing off Chicken Fried Dice. There was so much energy about this silly little food truck game @boardgameghee.bsky.social and I have been working on for years and years now

We ran out of flyers... so I'm taking this puzzle online! See if you can use the pre-plucked dice and abilities to feed all 4 customers. Our solution: urbanprofessional.games/cfd-puzzle-1...
Puzzle flyer front. This is a simplified version of Chicken Fried Dice that has some parts of the game filled in or simplified. Your goal is to feed all 4 customers. The truck has 3 prep ingredients: 4 yellow, 6 green, and 1 white. The truck has 1 sauce (change colors) and 1 chop (cut die into 2 numbers). Toss is unavailable. The menu board has one ability already available (green X). The pre-plucked dice are 4 white, 6 purple, 2 red, and 6 yellow. The customers are (from left to right and ingredients bottom to top)
- Okapi, white > green > purple. Reward 3 red X
- Chicken, white > red > red. Reward 1 wild X
- Lizard, white > yellow > green > yellow. Reward 2 sweet
- Fox, white > purple > red > red. Reward 1 red XPuzzle Rules
In Chicken Fried Dice, you operate your own food truck where you're trying to feed as many customers as you can. In this puzzle version of the game, try to feed all 4 customers using the dice we've plucked for you.
Feed customers by filling in all the ingredient slots on their cards using the numbers from matching ingredients. Ingredients come from dice and abilities. You must Order UP! the ingredients– meaning each number must be greater than or equal to any numbers below it. Once all the ingredient slots are filled, earn rewards from that customer in the form of star segments and abilities.
Star segments determine how well you did in this puzzle.
There are two types of abilities: Xs and favorites. Xs allow you put an X on an empty ingredient slot matching that color and disregard it for Order UP. The rainbow version is wild and can apply to any ingredient. Favorites allow you to circle an ability on the matching flavor track on the Favorites board (one is already available to use). This unlocks more abilities to feed customers.
Your truck has 3 stations to help you solve this puzzle. Prep includes 3 available ingredients with set colors and numbers. Use Chop to split any die into 2 numbers adding up to that die's number. Use Sauce to change the color of a die. You may not need all of them!
Good luck!

Oh, yes, if you haven't been by already... we're in Booth 2833 with a bunch of other amazing games. I also have Trickadee up on display for those with a keen eye. A few folks yesterday reaalllly wanted to play and it was so much fun being able to show it off to them over in the freeplay area.

Day 1 of #PAXUnplugged was hopping! It was really fun seeing people read the name of the game from a distance and make their way straight over for a demo. "You're telling me a chicken fried these dice?"
