Oh, yes. I’m quite sure they’ll take note and listen.

Parasocial stuff is odd for me, but the death of Dolly Parton hits different. I’ve shed tears for a person I never knew personally. She wasn’t just talented. She was a woman raised in abject poverty who used her fame and money to help countless others. She was what others should aspire to be.

Have any of you actually tried drawing a hippo? It all goes fine until you get to the eyes. Look at those things! Something about them just doesn’t translate in my brain and on to paper. They’re proper weird.

I’m currently invested in the frustrations of a woman on TikTok who keeps digging up rubbish from a midden that was buried in her garden. It’s all fairly recent stuff, and I do feel bad for her, but I think I’m fascinated because it’s a little microcosm in problems with archaeological dating.

Missing muscadines and scuppernongs this time of the year. I used to love picking those things and getting literal buckets full along with blackberries from my grandma’s back yard.

Took a picture of a cool gravestone with an interesting patina only to notice the looming big, veiny obelisk in the background.

Do people still appreciate crocheted blankets and knitted caps for their babies (primarily British folks)? I don’t know if I’m old or too southern American, but I don’t want to make something for someone they won’t want or use. I still have my son’s blankets gifted 20 years ago.

Arbor Low, a Neolithic henge monument in Derbyshire. It’s interesting to note this is the first time I’ve noticed people leaving things. It’s like a continuation of past repurposing and reverence.

History?? Since when is that a focus beyond being a political propaganda football? It isn’t a core subject timetabled with twice as many lessons. Students have a choice of opting out of history past KS3. Often, SATS takes priority, so pupils come to us woefully unaware of what history actually is.

When visiting a Neolithic site, it gives main character assembling a small copper structure to meditate under. However, to smoke a few times on-site, despite it being specifically prohibited, and in the middle of a tinder-dry field, makes you an arsehole. I hope this clarifies things.

Currently on a trip and we cross a toll bridge. One student didn’t understand why there is a toll. Their friend was explaining private ownership of said bridge and punctuated it with “you know, like the troll under the bridge…” A* explanation. I chuckled.

I actually loathe the fact that most interest groups and businesses just have Facebook pages. I get it. It’s free, but I just loathe Facebook. I can’t even try to give away a sodding sofa because I refuse to have a Facebook account (Yes, I know about alternatives, but people don’t really use them).

We went to say goodbye to our old friend yesterday. The Boy and I love walking around Sherwood Forest. We were both sad to hear about Major Oak as I’m sure people around the world are, too.
Major Oak, an ancient oak tree, stands with a large canopy of bare limbs twisting towards the sky. It sits in a green field in front of a forest.

Yesterday’s adventure was brought to by my incessant and tangential deep dives. To my knowledge, it’s the northernmost doom painting in England. It’s 14th century and way bigger than internet pictures would have you believe. St Mary and St Martin’s, Blyth, Notts - a mere 10-15 minute drive for me!
Wall of a church with faint outlines of a doom painting. The top register is Jesus with Mary and the Apostles alongside an angel blowing the trumpet for Judgement Day. The second register is dominated by scenes of different people rising from their coffins for judgement. At the right against a deep red background are outlines of the angel Michael holding weapons next to a faint outlines of a demon. At the bottom of this register appears another demon, a cauldron and what may be a wheelbarrow or cart. The left had register depicts saved souls being led away by another angel. Closer picture of the hell scene above what is thought to depict scenes of Christ’s life in smaller box registers. The scenes are very difficult to make out.

Hey, remember when The Watchmen TV series showed how deep the Operation Paperclip rabbit hole went, and many people learned about NASA’s origins through popular media, but the storyline about the continuance of the conspiracy was the fictional part? Yeah…good times, good times…

My Year 13s are currently learning Christian moral ethics and actions with the case study of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Despite the years that separate us from Bonhoeffer’s death, some of his theology becomes more prescient every time I teach it.

I hate the look of the new Nolan Odyssey film. If that makes me tedious and boring, so be it. If you want an adaptation that is wildly out-of-step with the period(s), Oh Brother Where Art Thou was brilliant.
