A major Brazilian coffee farm had its Rainforest Alliance certification suspended after its owners were convicted of subjecting workers to conditions analogous to slavery! Despite this, the farm passed RA audits in both 2025 and 2026.

[Commentary] Behind cheap instant coffee lies widespread deforestation in Vietnam. A new op-ed by Etelle Higonnet (@coffeewatch.bsky.social) details how Robusta production pushes tigers and elephants into shrinking habitats, calling on consumers to pressure companies for ethical supply chains.

Wipe 4% of your footprint, let the other 96% burn, call it progress. This isn’t climate leadership. It’s coffee (green)washing. Starbucks says “our success depends on healthy ecosystems.” Apparently it also depends on hoping no one is watching them.

Their new impact report shows total emissions are higher than in 2019. Scope 1 & 2 dropped 17%. Scope 3 (aka the real footprint) rose 8%. Scope 3 = 96% of their emissions. Total emissions = up 7%.

Coffee depends on bees, birds, healthy soil, and clean water. Yet many pesticides used to grow coffee are destroying the very ecosystems the crop needs to grow. The future of coffee depends on protecting nature—not poisoning it. coffeewatch.org/poison-in-your-coff…

Chemicals literally banned in Europe are exported to the Global South, used on farms, and then the residues end up in the coffee we drink. This is environmental injustice on a global scale.

Historic lows and today's highs aren't separate crises. They're two phases of the same story: thin margins, rising costs, and climate vulnerability that no price spike resolves.

Coffee Watch @coffeewatch.bsky.social · 16/06/2026
The Coffee Barometer 2026 makes the case plainly: high prices don't mean progress when they're part of a boom-bust cycle. Input costs have risen even faster. The structural asymmetry of the value chain remains intact, with value continuing to flow downstream.

Coffee production is up 62% in 25 years. Prices are at an all-time high. And yet coffee has never reflected the true cost of production.
