#WIPSnips 9-3: Effective (switching to #postapocalypse poly adventure) Unstable Classifications, novella 1.5, set after Blasted Research books2read.com/blasted-rese... 🐟 fish out of water settling in ⛈️ getting used to weather ☕ slice of post-apoc life 🌈xe/xem Jules #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
Unstable Classifications is a slice of life post apocalypse novella set between adventure books. (excerpt of WIPSnips for September 3rd 2026)

Jules wasn't thrilled
with the idea of galloping up the trails, but the rain was going to wash away anything else out here, so xe agreed that they needed to hurry.
"Do we split up? Will that be more effective?"
The question seemed to bother Li. He bit his lower lip very obviously, and there was concern etched with worry all along the lines of his face.
"No. We stick to the trail together. You're even worse at tracking than I am, so sending you off on your own won't be very helpful to either of us."

This book is being worked on by Coffee Quills - the cover is bright yellow-green and shows a person standing on a mossy tree branch several times bigger than xem.

... Virginia? I'm Florida born and raised (with a sprinkling of GA). Nearest city match is Miami, so that's right at least 😂 I really want to know where the heck "gumshoes" in my vocab came from for the shoes you wear in the gym... (my partner just looked at me & shook his head)
You talk most like someone from Virginia — about 45% of your answers match a typical resident.

The map of the USA shown has a lot of red and yellow areas in the south while the mid-north is very cold in blue.

Dandelions & DNA a cozy sci-fi novel (excerpt of WIPSnips for September 2nd 2026)

Aylce had shoved her whole life into work, clawing and studying and applying every ounce of luck to be where she was. There wasn't a single thing she regretted about that either. Families just... weren't for her. She had the patience to slice DNA, terraform, and double check her work, but answering a child's thousands of questions through the day? Not to mention when they deliberated pressed buttons, screamed, broke things, and we complete assholes to be around.

"Absolutely not," she muttered to herself, shuddering.

Dandelions & DNA a cozy sci-fi novel (excerpt of WIPSnips for September 1st 2026)

She'd already thickened the little insect's hind legs to work against a slightly high gravity, and there was a single new antenna in the middle of its forehead, slightly higher than the others, to make sure raindrops popped and spread their weight over a larger area. In addition, similar in the way that it could detect wilted sunflowers an avoid them, she programmed along that sense to also detect emissions from gardens and stay away from them, the signal for "delicious all-you-can-eat buffet" chemically changing into "danger; do not approach!"

A movie with a blonde woman and dark-haired man standing in front of a double headed axe painted to look like the American flag, but with an anarchist symbol instead of stars. A man leads a horse across a desert wasteland, and above him is an American flag with teh words (in red) on white stripes: The Restored United States of America.A man looks through a broken window. #PunkMarch Day 6 - #Teslapunk #WritingCommunity -if you've ever wanted crackling lightning arcs to do anything you can imagine, Telsapunk is for you! A micro/sub genre of Steampunk, instead of based on steam, this is based of Nikola Tesla & the power of cool with eletricty, coils & etc. inventions
#PunkMarch hosted by @CoffeeQuills
Teslapunk Aesthetics
Named after Nikola Tesla - based around eletricty! Think Tesla coils, plasma lamps, violet rays, etc.!
A little bit of steam (brass & leather) with glowing white, light blues, & neon purple electric crackles.
Similar in style to Steampunk with brass, top hats, goggles, and more - this alternative history adds plentiful and cheap electricity and/or eclectic magic powers.

Teslapunk Thoughts
Like Edison vs Tesla, does your punk go up against a specific figure?
Going up against corrupt empires? Companies? Is someone performing illegal experiments on people to gain more electric powers?
If the police have lightening guns/powers, what do regular people have?

#PunkMarch Day 5 #writingcommunity #Steampunk! All the cogs, gears, & pipes (both for smoke & steam). There's more to steampunk than just sticking gears on things - there's adventure, heists, discoveries & so much more! Automaton fights, sky pirates, anti-teach Luddites! How is the world changed?
#PunkMarch hosted by @CoffeeQuills
Steampunk Aesthetics
Retrofuturistic technology & designs inspired by Vitorian era/19th - go for brass & leather!
Cogs, gears, dials, and analog clocks! Everything runs off steam (add boilers + steam pipes!)
The world looks as if steam power was the most dominant! Inventions aren’t sleek, but untidy, cogs showing, and very much looking DIY.

Steampunk Thoughts
A good conflict in this time period is Romanticism vs. Enlightenment; does this continue for you?
How is the environment doing as you continue burning wood and coal?
Are other punks (like clockpunk or Tesla-punk) mixed with your steampunk? How are people divided? Are people fighting against your steam inventions?

#PunkMarch Day 4 - #Clockpunk! One of my favorite "~punks," I love gears coming together to make cars, monsters, or even household servants. Clock'bots using a watermill might stress about keeping enough water - or losing a winding key becomes more than a small personal problem. Plenty of plots!
#PunkMarch hosted by @CoffeeQuills
Clockpunk Aesthetics
Inspired by pre-industrial work, wood, brass, and bronze are popular, along with reflective surfaces like mirrors and lenses.
Machines and devices run on highly detailed gears (powered by springs? Winding keys? Water/Air mills)
Areas are very fantasy, but can also show off renaissance and Baroque time periods with incredible detail!
Clockpunk Thoughts
Who is making all these clockwork creatures? The government’s inventors or punk inventors? Why?
Is the world/country/universe/planet a clock, and the punks are trying to stop it? Re-start it? Slow down time to prevent a dystopia from forming?
Are inventors joining forces to fight? Is your punk responsible for gathering scarce/guarded materials?

#PunkMarch Day 3 - #Nanopunk! Similar to Biopunk, this turns away from bio to go nanite! Small, self-replicating machines that fix your cells, change your hair color, or give you something you didn't have before. Warning! The grey goo apocalypse can happen if those nanites never turn off!
#PunkMarch hosted by @CoffeeQuills
Nanopunk Aesthetics
Many neutral colors, white/silver/gray/black with all the colors society wants.
Machines and devices that are molecular assemblers - self-replicating nanites/autonomous nanoscale robots
High tech areas that look clean (too clean), places to quickly program or get pre-programmed nanites to change anything about you. Science can help... but will it?
Nanopunk Thoughts
Are we still human with these nanites changing you? Are you still you? Actually, do you have a personal identity anymore?
Warning: the grey goo apocalypse is coming! Or maybe those nanites are rewriting rival codes...
Are you fighting at the molecular level? The companies or people behind “enemy” nanites?

#PunkMarch Day 2 - #Biopunk! Similar in color to Cyberpunk, the tone shifts toward sickly greens and yellows as well as neon. Manipulating DNA, changing what's "human" or not depending on beliefs & severity of change. Do you fight people created with no empathy? Beast-men controlled by megacorps?
#PunkMarch hosted by @CoffeeQuills
Biopunk Aesthetics Bio-luminescent blues, purples, pinks + sickly greens and yellows against dark colors
Organic areas with biological architecture - your environment might be alive!
High tech areas with labs (illegal + legal), mega corporations with trademarked DNA, along with modified crops, bacteria, animals (not just for humans)
Biopunk Thoughts
Are we still human with genetic manipulation? How much is too much? When does it become failed, or body horror?
Are your punks against the system? Fighting their own bodies? What’s their purpose? Who does it help?
What/Who are you fighting? Out-of-control parasites? Corrupted beast-men? Police designed with no empathy?

#PunkMarch Cyberpunk's probably the most well known of punks. Aesthetics: colorful neon on darkness Themes: "low-life and high-tech" With great tech & science achievements, we've become a decaying society. Dystopia. Corrupted companies, invasive police... Do you fight for yourself or others?
#PunkMarch hosted by @CoffeeQuills
Cyberpunk Aesthetics
Explosions of neon colors (purples, reds, greens) against dark skies/buildings
Signs in multiple languages showing a multi-ethnic culture in the area
Tall buildings crammed into small areas so there’s no sky, only more buildings, exposed wires stretched across everywhere

Cyberpunk Thoughts
What makes us human? How are “non-human” people treated? (Robots, clones, AIs, people with cybernetic implants?)
Are your punks against the system for themselves or for a community? What’s their purpose?
What are you fighting? Oppressive tech? Corrupted companies? An invasive police state?

So, 1st, what is "Punk"? Punk was a music subculture (70s-80s) against The Man. Anti-corporation, anti-capitalist, anti-authority, etc. Pro-being yourself, pro-going against what society says you should do/be. With writing, the word (usually) in front of "punk" is aesthetics or the setting.
#PunkMarch hosted by @CoffeeQuills
What is "~punk"?
Punk was a subculture of music in the 1970s and 1980s - the ethos of punk primarily "being yourself and be against The Man."
Anti-corporation, anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarians, anti-corporate greed mixed with DIY-ethics, freedom, non-conformity, individual liberty.
What does this mean in writing?
Challenging the norms, looking at alternative futures, and going against the grain.
What do you get when a book is "~punk"?
Not just a variety of future/past/otherworld aesthetics. It’s a pairing: Aesthetics + Punk.
Punk isn't dead

Form a four Pokémon team using Pokemon whose names begin with the first letter of your name Now, do I go old school with Caterpie...? Nah. Chansey for a bit of luck. Chandelure to haunt my enemies. Chimecho to ward off evil/bad luck And a fiery hedgehog, Cyndaquil, to round out the team.
Pokemon Chansey (big, pink, and with a white egg)Chandelrure Pokemon - looks like a spooky gothic chandelier Chimecho Pokemon - looks like a wind chime Cyndaquil Pokemon - a small creature with fire spikes (like a hedgehog)

It's a little hard to swing from screaming frustrations out in the park to being the caretaker for a baby alien, but Ann-Marie's doing her best! Not like she can do anything else with Dinell (her alien abductor) watching her every move... #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity From Cosmic Caretaker
A white women in a blue dress stands in front of a blue alien man. The title is Cosmic Caretaker written by Coffee Quills, and the blurb goes: "We need to go, now!" The emotional reflex at the sound was fear and the alien man moved fast; he held the baby closer, snagged her purse, snatched his backpack, and pulled her after him. Ann-Marie dug her heels into the ground.

Crystal River, Florida. I remember going down the river as a child (with family), passing a few basking gators, and then happily jumping into the river to swim 😁
Crystal River with plenty of green trees and a sandy bottom
