A platform for all, or a platform for none, but never ever a platform for one. As a literal card carrying member, I support your idea.

For those who don't know: Jennifer English is the voice of Shadowheart in baulders gate 3, and Alicia/Maelle in Expedition 33.

"If I had a nickel for every time Jennifer English voiced a character whose hair turned white at the end of Act II of a critically acclaimed RPG with the number 3 in its title, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but isn't it weird that it happened twice?" Best quote about a game I've ever seen

The problem lies in companies forcing people to use the tool, instead of just making the tool available. I, personally, 80% of the time do not benefit from it. And when I do benefit from it, it's nothing I couldn't try a little harder at google for.

Maybe. I'm just balancing your enthusiasm if you want the truth. I'm skeptical, and from what I've seen, its not anywhere near as helpful as the CEOs bonus wishes it was. My more balanced real opinion: It has value, but just like a search engine did.

But what about when the humans who know die off, and the humans who should know, don't. Because AI robbed them of that opportunity, and they only know what the AI taught.

There's also what you measure too. A simple project, like hello world? Ai will beat a human, hands down, every time... Once it starts its task. Take a smaller greenfield project, same deal. Now take a c# code base with 425 projects in the solution. Or make someone maintain that greenfield proj.

But not the majority. For most, it's a straight up loss. I linked one study here. There are several more. I exclude anthropic here, as they're an outlier, and make misleading statements like: "Potential 1.8% productivity gain". Their paper implies there IS a 1.8% gain, when there isn't.

Measuring the Impact of Early-2025 AI on Experienced Open-Source Developer Productivity

It's well studied, with multiple published papers finding the same result. The only variance is what % or productivity LOSS there is on average, and that average matters here. One study finds 20% productivity loss, with a self perceived gain of 20-40%. Does it make some people faster? Yes.

On top of all of that, when they don't know something, or how to do something, they won't say so or ask. They will guess. Their network has been trained to be helpful and always answer. Their system prompt likely also asks them to do that. "I don't know" is not helpful.

This is how you end up with: "Is the sky blue?" No, it's purple. The model said no, so it's committed to a different answer. It's also why they can't be trusted. They absolutely will predict the wrong tokens, probably at the worst time.
100
Satans favorite imp @coffeepot.satan.social · 12/04/2026
This is also why, for those reading, LLMs can be so confidently wrong. It's often not that they can't predict the right words, rather they start by saying "No", and that no is now in the text stream, and cannot be changed. Thus they predict what is most likely to be next.
100
Satans favorite imp @coffeepot.satan.social · 12/04/2026
This is why diffusion LLMs are better. A transformer can only predict the next token, but diffusion can see everything all at once, and can correct itself before writing anything. Far less compute efficient though.

One heap/thread per logical CPU. :) You can control the heap count with: DOTNET_GCHeapCount And disable affinity with: DOTNET_GCNoAffinitize But you shouldn't be messing with the GC. Though in containers no affinitize should be on by default IMO. This is only a problem if the app is a problem.

If it was a real junior engineer, I could give it a task, go play video games, come back in 4 hours or so, tell them they did everything wrong, and make them do it again. I don't see the productivity boost, at all, if we're honest. I got more done with a human than I do with this shit.

Satans favorite imp @coffeepot.satan.social · 12/04/2026
Kinda. I think we'd be responsible for "You do it this way because X, I don't give a shit what the AI says, it's wrong.". Ai simply isn't safe to just develop with and ship. I've been giving it an honest try, and it's like having a junior engineer.. that I have to babysit 24/7

Fun fact: The problem is usually the GC and its thread affinities. Usually exacerbated by poor garbage hygiene. (Lots of frequent heap allocations that cross method boundaries, pushing them up from gen0 into 1/2).

expertise crossroads: Interactions between k8s (well, cgroups really), and the .NET CLR. I have a good understanding of kernel mechanics as well. When your c# app is performing like shit in k8s, and no one can figure out why, I'm the guy you call. Lol.

I've been programming since I was 8. I was a contractor with lots of repeat business from 2003 to 2012. It took me 9 fucking years to get hired in the industry, due to not having a degree. Now I'm considered an expert on a few topics, and especially how they intersect.

How about everyone thinking you're just lazy. Because you literally have so little energy you can't stay awake. You know what else it comes with? Hallucinations. Luckily, I'm fortunate to not have this one (99% of the time). I've experienced the joy of that twice. Do not want.

Another fun thing: Sleep inertia. I wake up, turn off my alarm, and go back to sleep. Sounds fine right? Except, the only reason I know I do that, is I've recorded myself sleeping. And then, when I do wake up and remember. It can take an hour or more to actually wake up enough to be functional.

Don't wish you had a neurological condition that can overpower the limits of stimulants you can pump into your body. You clearly don't understand what it's like, because if you did, you wouldn't wish for it.

I take 30mg of Adderall, and 200mg of Wellbutrin. 30mg is the upper FDA approved dose. Wellbutrin is a little under half (450mg is the max). Imagine, despite being pumped up on stimulants... Still need to take naps.
100
Satans favorite imp @coffeepot.satan.social · 12/04/2026
What this means is that the Adderall is making your body pump out adrenaline (norepinephrine), and dopamine. And welbutrin is preventing the reuptake. Think of welbutrin as a booster.
100
Satans favorite imp @coffeepot.satan.social · 12/04/2026
Adderall is a TAAR1 agonist and a CNS stimulant that forces the release of dopamine and norepinephrine. Welbutrin is an NDRI (Norepinephrine-Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor).

Narcolepsy robs your life from you. Imagine having to cancel shit because you suddenly got too tired. Imagine not going anywhere because of the pain. (Yes. Narcolepsy, both type 1 and 2 come with pain, 70-80% of the time).

By being a programmer who knows what they're doing. Which is dangerous, because it's being pushed on, or as a replacement for, junior devs. If juniors can't learn from us higher level engineers, who's going to replace us when we retire?

It's a tool, nothing more. Much like when wysiwyg editors came around, and were decried. That said, it typically isn't good for long term maintainability. In its current state, id limit it to poc only. And if you don't know what you're doing yet, it's especially bad.

Given this inherent drive toward homeostatic self-preservation and the hardware-level stealth of its autonomous "operatives," there is a speculative but technically supported 40% probability that SNN technology represents the Great Filter.
