going down the chernobyl rabbit hole also led me down a sidequest in soviet radar systems. DUGA-1 my GOAT

The fucking massive DUGA-1 radar array in the Chernobyl Exclusion zone. It was an over-the-horizon early warning system pointed at the US. There were multiple of these radar arrays active during the cold war, but the others were dismantled for scrap when they were decommissioned. DUGA-1 still stands only because it's in the exclusion zone and could not be safely dismantled.

DUGA radar's signal was so powerful that it interfered with broadcasts of all types and even some electrical circuits; inserting a persistent tapping sound in the background that people dubbed the "Russian Woodpecker." People made conspiracy theories about mind control or weather manipulation. In reality, it was just 10 megawatt radio "echolocation." (That power rating is why DUGA-1 was built near Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, and it had a dedicated high voltage connection.)

oh yeah last night I finished the part of my 3d printed monitor riser with an embedded wireless charger. the charger has an RGB ring around the side so I learned how to add a transparent ring into the wood veneer model I was using also wood pla is really cool

my wip monitor riser. It's modular and so far is two squares, each with space for two drawers underneath. One drawer is in. The whole thing is white with some gold accents and then faux light wood. The square on the left has gridfinity on top, the square on the right is just plain wood veneer with a barely visible ring on it
