I think we should coin a name for the speculative world-building practice of sliding an unmarked speculative element into a mundane list. There is an example in Wickhills that delights me, not least because it reminds me of another favorite example from Ian McLeod's "Green".

This is really interesting and informative! I appreciate this really rigorous look complicating things that have been generally accepted as fact in popular culture e.g. the mechanics of spillover. I hope it gets the coverage and care it deserves (and wish we had more actual science journos).

A lovely launch for Gale Wilhelm's We Too Are Drifting, the newest of the Recovered Books series from @bhousepress.bsky.social, at the Vespiary, a cozy queer-owned bookstore and bindery in Missoula. Talie Wilkinson, who wrote the afterword, reflected on the mystery of why Wilhelm stopped writing.

Rec: Aurora Stewart de Peña's Julius Julius, a novella about isolated employees at the oldest ad agency in the world, founded in Pompei before the eruption; the archives are in a limestone cave; has ghosts & silly-looking dogs. Hilariously deadpan, deeply creepy, & achingly sad.

Thrilled to learn there's going to be an English edition of Hideko Mizuno's Fire!, a late 60s precursor to the revolutionary shojo manga of Moto Hagio and Keiko Takemiya. I saw some panels in a traveling exhibit in 2006 and have been longing for it ever since.
