codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 13hAs other’s have said aquariums are such unnatural environments. Even if you had a “pro” digital camera& the “right” equipment like polarising filters, fast lenses etc instead of a phone you will still end up with very artificial feeling shots. 110
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 13hIt’s almost always best to play into more abstract compositions that focus on using the unusual properties of that kind of situation. I think happily shot has worked out well because of that. 110
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 14hI enjoyed the character of kingdom’s princess. A gentle mix of duty & discomfort to a role her appearance has made her a natural for, but that she is unsuited temperamentally to. Her maid in waiting is in contrast perfectly suited to her role (aka lightly teasing her boss with considerable relish). 000
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 14hNot a beautiful show in a conventional way, but it's clearly picked a style which really fits an older world without artifical light. A very natural & harmonious colour pallet throughout. It’s nice to have another show not over reliant on post processing of it’s animation or backgrounds. 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 14hThe titular brotherhood of knights was pleasant to be around, & showed some glimpses of depth of personality (despite their names). It was also nice the older generation had its own character & wern't just the prototypes for the generation the show mostly seemed concerned with. 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 14hThe Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom is an interesting outlier show this season. Slow paced & with a few strange quirks (particularly around names) but genuinely charming & committed to grounding itself in a world that fit it's pace. 141
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Ahh that makes sense I’m a Brit & sometimes I forget about the impact Toonami had on the US market because we just had no equivalent. Fans in the uk didn’t really have access to anime tv shows it was mostly just films & OVAs which found their way into the fringe until dvd by mail & the P2P era. 000
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 01/10/2026It turned out to be warmly recieved but what was more interesting to me was the adjacent FMA review. Which was not as kind saying it had “brilliant premise with questionable execution”, that Alphonse “looks like an evil robot” & bemoaning it being “the only game in town” for shonen action fans. 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Yeah we certainly take it for granted. It’s important to anyone talking about media to not just let ourselves assume that works were always viewed the same way. I was reading their Fall 2003 Preview guide recently because i was looking for contemporary reactions to PLANETES’s anime for a discussion 100

Japanese hobby press like Famitsu, Animate Times, and even some more mainstream outlets regularly scrub their archives to save disk space. 1233
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Yeah the Shiboyugi soundtrack is excellent all in all. Though I’m not sure what discovering that I’m very productive when I’m listening to it says about me 😅 Maybe looming disquiet & implied threat is a good motivator🤔 020

codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026The other thing is i’d hope if this conversation took place offline in any informal setting one person would go: “Sorry whats the English title of that?” & the other would reply “Oh it’s X but i call it Y because of Z” and they’d hash it all out between them in the moment 010
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Outside anime I encounter settled usage of Japanese names in the Umamusume community a lot. Where even though features in the EN game have anglicised names the community keeps using many of the old terms from the JP game & the wiki’s that chronicled its mechanics. 101
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026A personal example for why a title might persist is I ended up switching from Goodbye Lara to Sayonara Lara in my discussion with friends last season, because the way the later rolled of the tongue felt intended & more natural. (Helped by the fact were all aware of both names) 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Going back to what all kicked this off, it feels like that the core contention was around when does the title of a translated work become settled usage? Community/fan translated works might keep a Japanese name for any number of reasons & after a until it becomes both the practiced & practical usage 100

codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 27/09/2026The silver lining is hopefully we reach a point where people have let it sit with them & the pressure to take sides in a discourse ebbs we get some intresting conversation again. 120
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I’ve seen a few people who were enthusiastically pondering aspects of the show during it’s run go a quite after the backlash from the finale. which is both understandable & a shame. I want to hear peoples perspectives be they praise or criticism without them having to fear they would be weaponised 110
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026It’s a genuine shame because I liked their final performance. Faking a performer being dropped to bring drama to a show was a good example of the theme they introduced of switching to telling stories with their act to compete with movies etc 000
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I genuinely assumed it would cut to Maria & Rin. You know the two who have shared all their time together all it’s run time & not out of nowhere reveal that ACTUALLY she was in love with Mizuka’s dad all along. Now that what i call Yuri baiting! 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026At this point it’s probably a good thing half the people watching have dropped Grow Up Show/Circus-dan, because god if you ever wanted a real example of a why trying for the super happy ending & tie up every loose end is a bad idea this was it 110
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026If one day I see someone posting: “uuuuuuuuurgh another show where the girls kiss at the end!! typical Yurislop!” that piece of art may be dumb, but the world may be in a better place. 000
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Emotionally however wanting to feel validated by a society, to feel seen in it’s stories, is all more than understandable. None of which requires a work to be good. Wanting acceptance is a fundamental emotional drive to almost all humans. 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026When we accept only the legitimacy of a conventional end to a story, we end up producing a more derivative work. It remains important that critical analysis should meet art on it’s own terms. To accept the primacy of it’s thematic preoccupations, not our own. To let them speak. 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Lara 3.0 You Can (Not) Progress. Among the finale reaction one thread has been how productive it is to hold Yuri (or progressive) works to a higher standard of proof of intention than conventional works? It frustrated because Lara wasn’t subtle, her love was writ large. It was Text not subtext. 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026If anyone asks where are you going with all that? all I can say is Anno made me wait years to get that question answered one day ain’t too bad 😅 000
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Equally we knew early(ish) who Lara loved, & who loved her. But could that love endure & emerge the other side of the trials it would face? What else do we need in our lives to be happy? Can feelings can persist even over distance? What happens when insecurity does not magically disappear? 020
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026But what was important in Botan did next once love being returned became a given, tension shifted to how to sustain a relationship. What else do we need in our lives to be happy? Can feelings can persist even over distance? What happens when insecurity does not magically disappear? 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026But part of the reason that Botan Kamiina was able to even elude to physical intimacy at an early stage is because it’s cast are old enough to have a intimate relationships that continues to deepen past a kiss. This is for what should be fairly obvious reason not something you do with 15 year olds 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Lara 2.0 Your Can (Not) Be Touched My favourite show of the summer season was Botan Kamiina Only Blossoms When Drunk, & part of the reason for this is that it’s its shows intimacy early(ish) in it’s run. It’s not however treated as a culmination of love, just as a change in it. 100
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Hans Christian Andersen author of the original Little Mermaid did not feel the legitimacy of his mermaids love should be contingent on others. “I have not... allowed the mermaid's acquiring of an immortal soul to depend upon an alien creature, upon the love of a human being. I'm sure that's wrong!” 040
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026In a conventional romance the tension over desire’s legitimacy hangs over the narrative like a Sword of Damocles. It’s this that build the classic drama of “will they wont they”. But by accepting the primacy of the final 1% we devalue every before or after & this restrict the stories we can tell 120
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026The best storytellers build empathy towards characters, we begin to understand what they desire & why they desire it. If communicated well the gap between our own & someone else’s experience vanishes. If “art” (whatever that may be) is to have any purpose in society surely this is it. 120
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Lara 1.0 Your Are (Not) Desired To desire & to be desired in turn is wired into us. For a long time society only classed desire that was consummated as legitimate, often symbolised in the form of a kiss. This is deeply problematic socially, but I’m going to keep to why it’s a problem narratively. 120
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Warning: Some nuance was harmed in the making of these posts. 000
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Time to reflect on the End of Sayonara Lara Or as I’m going to call the posts Rebuild of Lara 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, & 3.0+1.0 If I’m going to do a bit, I’m going to commit. Early stuff on where this kind of story sits in the media landscape. Later stuff on the reaction (spoiler: I’m sorta hopeful?) 100

codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 25/09/2026on a very minor technicality. I wouldn’t say its rotoscoped because as at least to me that means redrawing over a frame which still allows traditional animation choices like framerates. Where a I thiiiiink this looks & behaves far more like a after effects filter would do in my experience 040
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 25/09/2026it’s true it was wildly out of character for the show in some ways but I’m still glad it happened 120
codi @codiduncan.bsky.social · 25/09/2026it does truly need to be seen in motion to be believed. It’s not every day you find yourself sorta blinking and questioning if you didn’t hallucinate what happened. 12013
