Achtung! DENIC seems to have been attacked. Lots of .de domains are down - including my own, giga dot de, uni siegen, hetzner, host-on - loads of major sites. status.denic.de #DigitalSovereignty

I'm a translator and an icon designer. And I don't like the translate icon. Who's with me? It's focused on script differences - using a Chinese and Latin character. It's Chinese-centric yet sinophobic, making Chinese the archetypal "other". Would we benefit from new options? #icons #xl8 #webdev

A set of alternative and traditional translate icons. Some show symbols instead of different scripts. Some are blank, like a template. It is a screenshot from sustyicons.com.

Rachel Reeves is talking about freezing Russian assets. I'm not sure dishing out this sort of physical punishment against political opponents is justifiable under the ECHR, though the Tories want to abolish that I guess. #russianassets #borisjohnson #budget #ukpolitics #Russia

Who cares about dead bad people, like Hulk Hogan or Epstein, when kids are starving to death in Gaza? Hunger should never be a weapon. We must never do business with a state that thinks it is. Feed, feed Palestine.

I decided I could/should start sharing new icons as I add them to the Susty Icons set. For absolutely no reason at all, I got up this morning and felt a desire to make a peace symbol. Then, obviously, I was thinking about flags. #SustyIcons #sustainablewebdev #sustyweb #sustywebdev

Hypermobile nerds: I have a tip. Get a trackball mouse with a central ball. I got it so can use my left as well and give my right hand and shoulder a break. I am sold. I absolutely love the scroll wheel. Kensington Orbit with scroll ring. #chronicpain #eds #ehlersdanlos #hypermobility

Sneak peek: Based on the (not subsetted) file sizes of sans serif variable fonts provided by Matthias Altmann's Webfont Loader tool, I was able to work out which fonts have the smallest file size. These only have variable weight. The top 4 are quite blocky, but Sen by Kosal Sen is excellent! #font

Ooookay. I had a really quick play. Oxygen 6 is incredibly interesting for #sustainabledev and #greendev practices. They've done away with jQuery. A blank page with one line is 11 kb. A page testing the new elements - a form, TOC generator, star rating system, countdown timer came to this.

Oxygen 6, the latest version of Oxygen Builder, the WP builder for devs, has just been released. I like Oxygen Classic because of how easy it is to remove junk. But look at all the junk you can now remove in one click. cc @byintention.co @sustainable-dev.bsky.social @sitegeistwebservices.com

Strong evidence of tactical voting in Germany tonight. Two examples here in Berlin: 1: Marzahn-Hellersdorf. #Grüne and #SPD supporters clearly voted tacitcally for the moderate #CDU guy. 2: Treptow-Köpenick. Here, they voted #Linke for celeb-politician Gysi. #votetactically #AfDVerbot #Bundeswahl

Hallo #Lichtenberger! Leute in #Berlin - #Lichtenberg! Nur #LINKE haben eine Chance gegen #AfD oder gar #BSW. Wenn ihr links, grün, zentristisch oder gar demokratisch denkt: Dann wählt bitte in Lichtenberg unbedingt LINKE mit der 1. Stimme. Die 2. Stimme ist mir erstmal egal. #politik #bundeswahl

Today I learned there are European hamsters out in the wild in some parts of Europe, with a significant population in Vienna's Central cemetery. I visited Vienna a few years back and it's now my biggest regret about our visit. We should have gone to see the hamsters. I mean look at this guy?!

Hi, it's me, Rose. I'm here with a political broadcast for people in Germany, especially those from abroad: You may remember me from such hits as speaking too fast at the Brandenburg Gate in a Stop the Coup protest to do with Brexit. TL;DR: Sunday, 3pm, Bundestag, Berlin, be there. #NoAfD

Demo poster in German about the demo mentioned in the post. It means CDU votes alongside the AfD for the first time in the German Parliament. headline reads "He did it". Demo details: 2nd February 2025, 3.30 pm, lawn in front of the Bundestag.

As some of you have no doubt gathered, the CDU/CSU under Merz broke Germany's biggest taboo yesterday: collaboration with the AfD to get anti-immigrant legislation pushed through.

Merz is, unfortunately, likely to become the Chancellor in the upcoming elections. More on that another time.

For now, Merz breaking this 'firewall' - the principle that the rest will always collaborate when needed to stop the far right and never collaborate with them - is causing huge political upset. Merkel has even come out of retirement to condemn his actions.

The actual plans include some that will affect those of us who obtain German citizenship as a second citizenship.

While the idea is that only those who commit serious crimes can lose it, this breaks an important principle of equality under law. Not least because definitions of what constitutes a serious crime can change with governments. I don't want my political voice muted because I'm worried I'll be punished differently to my German-born husband.

Equally, this is about solidarity. That Bio-Deutsch bullshit applies EXACTLY to me. Ausländer applies EXACTLY to me. But it never gets directed at me, because I'm white. I've found myself unintentionally vouching for non-white Germans in the past. I know I don't need to worry as much as Black British people in Germany. But it's sick, and I don't want my adoptive home - no, MY COUNTRY - to go down this path.

Maybe you feel the same.

What can you do?

ADHD dreaming: the 'oh look, a squirrel!' effect. I had a spooky dream about my late grandmother last night. It went lucid as we discussed the fact she's dead, but then I saw two eyes on top of the shed... A black cat. And it became all about cuddling the cat. So it was 'oh look, a cat!'.

Face of a black cat, with eyes looking expectantly at the camera.
