Another excellent PyCon AU. To all my US and EU based friends, I really do think it’s the best Python conference and you should come for 2027!

Does anyone know how to say "reading the card explains the card" in Klingon?

Can someone please show me how to see when a given container image tag on GHCR was pushed because all I can find is "over 1 year ago " on the page. They can't really be this bad at things, can they?

Mystery Booster Commander is so incredibly my jam. Still waiting until Trek spoilers to brew new decks but there’s gonna be a bunch.

I would like to welcome “goose was not valued” to the club of things I mutter that no one around me understands, along friends such as “SSL added and removed here” and “no I’m spartacus”.

A very merry "really?" to Synology for burying the connector for this NAS _inside_ the back panel such that you need a 90-degree C13 head to plug it in.

Twisted 26.4.0 is out today! Some highlights: - there's a new "tls:" endpoint that can absorb your certbot config/live directory, or any other pile of PEM files, and it will automatically identify which certs and chains go with which keys and serve them all, making HTTPS deployment much easier […]

Preface: This is not a dunk or an I Told You So. It is a reminder that other (better?) worlds can exist. GitHub Actions is clearly all over the tech news lately. A repeated weak point across the industry. I, for the most part, do not use GHA and you don't have to either. When I started my […]

I really can't overstate just how much all the social hubs for software people (of all kinds) are dying due to bots and spam. Across the board, places to learn the craft of building good software are being locked down because the tide of capital-c Content™ is unceasing. I have been a community […]

Quick Friday task to improve your personal security: go check your browser and text editor plugins, and disable any you haven't used lately. You can always turn them back on later.

I don't mean to be a killjoy but "vouching for trusted people" is not a scalable way to build a software ecosystem. I was there, I ran signing parties, I was a CAcert assurer, I've got a strong-set GPG key in a hardware token, none of it worked beyond the most fringe of the fringe dorks. You get […]

And the show has reached a new low. Just got a cold call from a vendor at a conference I am not attending asking if I can come by their booth to see a product demo. Who does that?

Listening to a talk on "open supply chain security" and I just get so mad that all these answers seem to resolve around "extract _even more_ labor and value from internet randos until the problem is solved".

People keep telling me to treat LLMs as junior devs, as if "a junior dev who is structurally incapable of learning from mistakes" isn't a working definition of hell.

A thing I found at random looking for something else: the original painting that is the cover for The Diamond Age. Interesting to see it uncropped.

Current status: running knapsack solvers to work out a layout for so I can (re)design a custom card so I can explain the rules to other people so I can eventually play a children's card game. (remaking my reminder card for the Commander Game Changers list now that there's more things on it)

Checking that a PyPI project has a release history going back before 2021 and thus probably isn't an LLM-hallucination-driven supply chain attack vector is basically our equivalent of low-background steel.

I would not have guessed this was possible! Vladan Majerech has found a one-dimensional spaceship in the Game of Life: a pattern just one cell high and 3,707,300,605 cells wide that, after 133,076,755,768 generations (during which it is not confined to the one-dimensional line, of course) […]
