I am in the same boat, my behaviour was always intensely managed growing up, and I'm still unravelling the fallout from that. The moment I was able to get out of that family home years ago, I could really start ♥️

My best bet so far has been books (audio or otherwise), and videos. I find that people tend to believe third party sources more easily than our own word when it comes to this haha, especially family members. But if you can't get through, it isn't your fault, the only thing we can do is our best.

It's because of what we're expected to do, in a society that isn't quite in the know ;w; when we're alone we can freely express ourselves, but with the natural need to socialise...things get mask-y, and not being able to control our autistic selves then creates a disconnect between body and soul

Read this book if you have things you want to say about your autism, but can't find the words. Naoki has a lot of great analogies, and he makes you realise a few things about your autistic self! When I was living with parents i had those fights too, just remember that you deserve compassion. ♥️

sometimes i'll say 'my brain is..' or 'my body is...' instead of 'i am' because what i actually am (autistic) vs what i want to be for others (functionally neurotypical) clash. i bet this is common for people (especially people growing up afab and/or emotionally oppressed) diagnosed late in life.

meeting my autism a few years ago, after experiencing all kinds of pain growing up, has been a bit like meeting myself for the first time. i have to somehow understand what i'm communicating, what i'm feeling when i panic or flee, or what i'm really trying to say when i stumble verbally.
