Yin liked watching the girl, she took on more work than her delicate hands liked, carried more than her frail frame would allow, and argued back with the warrior in words that made Yin blush. If the warrior practiced her martial arts, the girl would be watching, her eyes following the warrior’s movements like a moth tracing the flickers of flame.
The two women were traveling this whole time, but he hadn’t known to where. Yesterday, he recognized his village coming up in the horizon. It dawned on him with a ray of excitement: they were coming for him—and they would find him ready and waiting.

San-he’s heart sank. His sister was married off, his father had fainted in front of his eyes, and his mother—his mother planned all of it. “Why?” San-he asked quietly. “I…I am already Crown Prince. The throne would’ve been mine. You… didn’t need to do anything.”
His mother’s face suddenly fell. She released the tension in her posture. San-he hadn’t realized, but she had been physically shrinking herself—until now.
Jin smiled. “But, oh, my dear—I wanted to.” She took a seat at the table, as if they were merely having afternoon tea. As if she did not just admit to treason. Jin poured herself a cup of tea. “Empress Mei was a perfect wife, and yet he had her killed as a gift for me.”
San-he frowned. “Empress Mei’s death was… an accident…” His chest ached. From his wounds. From his mother’s words. He pushed away from the bed. A small part of him wished his mother had denied everything. He would’ve believed any lie she told him.

He looked away from his mother, knowing that if he glanced at her, he would weaken in resolve. “My mother is desperately in need of rest. Take her to the guest room—no one is to disturb her.” As the maids led his mother away, her silk robes dragged a somber melody across the floor.
San-he’s legs wobbled as he limped back to the bed. The scent of wine and blood filled the room. His head hurt from the suffocating silence. Love. Family. Blood. All crushed beneath the crown.
He knew it would be his burden eventually, but not now, not like this. When he looked again at his father, the Emperor’s face was peaceful. San-he wondered if his father’s last remarks to his late Empress were those of love, or guilt.

The ice had preserved Qin perfectly. A wry and lengthy snake, his body curled around itself until he resembled a child’s toy. Ring upon ring upon ring. Linna forced her feet forward, the sight of her familiar sitting still sent a shiver through her. Never in all her years after bonding with Qin had he stopped moving.
Linna shattered the ice, taking care to preserve a thin layer around Qin to not hurt him. Her hands shook as she picked up the small remaining block of ice. She held him to her heart, melting the final layer with her body heat, tears, and frantic whispers.
“Please, please, oh goddess—no!” As she felt the cold, stiff scales of Qin, the tether between their souls shattered. A violent gasp escaped Linna as she fell to her knees. All this time, she thought that Qin must have survived. That because their bond was intact, he was out there, somewhere.
The night that they came for her flooded back. Qin had warned her against helping humans. He had told her that those whippersnappers didn’t deserve her. She hadn’t listened; she believed that if she helped enough humans, that one day they would treat all magical creatures with just a bit more grace. The fire. Oh, goddess. The fire engulfed everything. Qin told her to run, that he would handle these pesky children. He would freeze them all.
