I spent a few hours today going through the comments on my fics and looking at the reviews on Etsy for my OFMD art, and all I can say is that I don’t think I ever felt so genuinely accepted and supported before I found this fandom. 2/5

I’m on an unplanned train journey across England after my bus was cancelled, so for WIP Wednesday I want to share a WIP I’ve been tinkering with since the last time I took this train.

It’s early morning, the air sharp and the ground white with the first frost of the year.
Ed’s late for his train.
Lungs burning, he jogs along a narrow footpath painted orange and yellow by a thick layer of autumn leaves. His feet already ache in his battered Dr Martens. He needs to start wearing his running shoes to the station—the ones with the soles that are a little too clean to fool anyone that he uses them for anything other than wearing around the house—and pack his boots into his rucksack. But doing that would be admitting that he’s chronically late for work. And he can’t give Izzy the satisfaction. Ed can see the man now, standing behind the counter in their record shop, lips pursed and arms crossed, as Ed bursts through the door, well past opening time.
Ed speeds up, weaving around an old woman walking her equally old terrier in a scruffy tartan coat. It’s an adorable sight—the dog toddling along, its fat little legs sinking into the carpet of leaves on the pavement. Ed slows, itching to stop and pet him. But he doesn’t. And he’s pretty proud of that.

Dogs have always been Ed’s kryptonite. As a kid, he’d walked into oncoming traffic, his attention laser-focused on the biggest dog he’d ever seen. After his mum had stopped crying and shouting at him for nearly being flattened by a Land Rover, she had reluctantly allowed him to pet the dog (an Irish Wolfhound) and ask the owner as many questions as an eight-year-old could think up when faced with a dog the size of a small horse. He’d told that story to the psychiatrist that assessed him for ADHD, and to this day, Ed’s certain that he was diagnosed based on that anecdote alone.
Ed gives the dog one final look and shoots the owner a quick smile before picking up speed again.

The bus I was meant to take from the airport to my sister’s was cancelled because of snow. This was the snow.
