For many group-living females, breeding and raising young are shared endeavors
Some female animals living in groups raise offspring that are not their own, sometimes without reproducing themselves. While the behavior of cooperatively breeding species is well documented, some asp...

3/4 Using data from 101 wild cooperatively breeding populations of #birds and #mammals, our study highlights the need to (i) uncover the conditions that favour the formation of multi-female groups, and only then (ii) to identify those conditions that support the realisation of female cooperation.

2/4 In contrast to the view that breeding monopolisation is common among #cooperative_breeding, we show that when multiple adult females co-reside in the same group, they often alloparent each other’s offspring and share reproduction, rather than monopolise it.

NEW paper based on the Co-BreeD! Scholars sought to understand why, in #cooperative_breeding species, females care for the offspring of others while a dominant female monopolises reproduction. Yet, we show that females more often share, rather than monopolise reproduction!

Fabulous @anticac.bsky.social wrote a beautiful highlight on our first #Co-BreeD dataset. She was also worried about how often Co-BreeD would be updated. Well, time will tell, but meanwhile, the second dataset about #allonursing (& update) is already under review ;)

How many cooperatively breeding bird & mammal species are there? Co-BreeD constantly works to get a more accurate estimation for this question. We will now start sharing updated estimations in return for new followers! So help us get the 120th follower (= share!) & we will post our first estimation!
