Here are eight things public universities can’t do with their current budget model. There’s a new plan, discussed at the link, that won’t fix the budget but will hurt research

this is great student journalism at @DukeChronicle . When I was there in January the faculty had been told office cleaning would be cut back to once a month or so by an outsourced company after firing many low-income staff, and then these executives cleaning up

Gallup-Lumina poll on college confirms that Americans are upset about the personal politics of professors--that is, 11% are concerned. Three-quarters are upset about lack of affordability. Colleges should ignore the Twitter / Atlantic debates and lower costs while heading to debt-free for all

A portion of The New School's staff and faculty have just been fired. This is its AAUP chapter's response to another debacle. Sympathy to the affected people and hope that their colleagues can roll at least some of the cuts back

the FT has two pieces on the slow-motion collapse of UK higher ed. 4/5ths of unis are doing voluntary layoffs; 38% are doing compulsory. Meanwhile Britain and its flatlined productivity growth sleepwalks through its unprecedented loss of advanced capabilities www.ft.com/content/8097...

At ISRF, we're doing a series called 'Dispatches from British Academics." Actual profs are absent from public discussion of universities, and we mean this to be a partial corrective. The first four are here including Lorna Finlayson's Scabology. enjoy-and circulate! isrf.org/search?q=&ta...

The right claims to have the answers, and here's their answer--illness and death! The combination of privatization (US) and austerity (UK) have put the UK and US in 20th and 21st out of 21 countries in this study. Dead last, dead being the key word. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

Details here reinforcing the fact that Texas Republicans have eliminated academic freedom in that state. And also this, from one of the departing profs: it's not a popular position, it's a distraction position (from the Rs doing nothing for people's everyday issues other than making them worse).

I went to Queen Mary UCU to see if they had info about the new redundancy plan announced for Goldsmiths (5th or 6th in the past decade), and found the kind of list you find now for UK universities. The sector management is just ridiculous. @UKLabour is letting slow collapse happen.

it’s devastating to see students looking at their professors as cowed and silenced people. Instead, they need to see their professors actively fighting right-wing censorship.

I wrote a new post at Remaking on the Brown U agreement--much worse than announced--and what it would take for faculty to block defeatist policy. I discuss 5 statements--Paxson at Brown, @adam_tooze vs. @lionel_trolling, Paul Campos, Rachid Khalili. The final 2 really help. An Athens sunset. /1

Further to my belief that Trupp is the gravedigger of the U.S. economy, this from an Aston U report at the FT. Tarrifs hurt North America the most, taking down peaceful neighbors to north and south, then the US itself. Tech tax haven Ireland is the only real victim among European "enemies."

it's completely maddening that McMahon of world wrestling can casually destroy the Dept of Education, especially its units collecting data on things like racial inequality of attainment, without evidence of a problem and with only a bullshit PR statement about how gutting is really efficiency.
