Not clear? It's because they're bad! It's because they're stupid and bad and hate immigrants and don't care what happens to them!

The paper is open access so give it a read if you're interested! Lots more in the paper than I could fit in the thread, and more in the appendix that I couldn't fit in the paper! doi.org/10.1017/psrm...

“We need the right kind of people in this neighborhood”: racial motivation in opposition to new housing construction

These results suggest that certain, facially race neutral, concerns raised by residents may be driven or influenced by racial animus.

Clayton Becker @cnbecker14.bsky.social · 18h
Substantively, this study provides the first causally identified evidence of which I am aware that racial bias and worries about non-White neighbors moving in remain motivations for opposing new housing for a non-trivial share of White Americans.

The list experiment on the other hand, is well adapted to identifying whether a certain attitude exists at all.
130
Clayton Becker @cnbecker14.bsky.social · 18h
Methodologically, this suggests that researchers should think twice about using factorial or conjoint designs for uncovering bias. Factorial and conjoint experiments are not designed to uncover sensitive attitudes, and can *only* show evidence of those attitudes if those attitudes win out.
130
Clayton Becker @cnbecker14.bsky.social · 18h
Using a multi-experiment design, I show that factorial experiments may fail to uncover racial bias, but a list experiment finds evidence of significant racial bias as a motivator against new housing construction.

Clayton Becker @cnbecker14.bsky.social · 18h
I investigate this in the context of opposition to new housing development in the respondent's neighborhoods.

New paper in @psrm.bsky.social How we measure racial bias is important, but there is no clear agreement (rather a lively methodological debate) among political scientists about the best way to do so.

Made empanadas tonight for the first time. Frankly, kinda crushed it. Best outcome I've had for a first cut at a recipe in a while.

It is SO much worse. Like, not to gas myself up too much, but I think I am a pretty good teacher and whenever I have to teach online I'm like "wow I suck at this"

There must be some kind of unwritten rule I'm not aware of that says the dodgers aren't allowed to have a comfortable win in a postseason game. Christ on a cracker this team is going to be the end of me.

Obviously the question of non-citizen voting in local elections is a thorny one, but these are people who, in a lot of ways, are bearing the brunt of the housing shortage, but who, in most cases, have genuinely no way to express their preference for more housing electorally.

Somewhat crazy crosstab from a 2025 PPIC survey. Very substantial majority of Californians support building more apartments, 72% overall, but the percentage of noncitizens that support more housing is 92%!!!

Watching Ghostbusters for the first time in a long time and man, this movie is great, but it is also *so* insanely an 80s movie. Having the secondary antagonist be an agent from the EPA is an insane choice 💀

Reading some Econ lit as I consider a new project and jeez man, we gotta get these guys to redesign their tables so they fit on one page and don't require landscape orientation. This is the 21st century surely we can achieve this.

The days I have time to go on a morning run are so much better than the days I don't. This relationship is clearly causal and I will not be taking questions at this time.

I also think they still don't realize *why* they are losing the base. People increasingly see DSA and adjacent progressives as the only folks offering an actual vision. Establishment democrats can't seem to figure out what they actually want to *do* with the power of the state.

My wife turned to me with a flabbergasted look on her face like "why haven't you been making this the whole time??" so now I think I'm contractually obligated to make it significantly more often.

Made pizzas this afternoon which required prepping the dough yesterday for a 24 slow rise in the fridge and I regret to inform everyone that they really were significantly better than my regular one hour pizza dough.

Bass to step down from LA's lead homeless agency commission. LAist found she was often absent
L.A. Mayor Karen Bass announced a planned exit a week after LAist reported she skipped a majority of meetings for the region’s lead homeless services agency.

So true the Boston airport employees lack the skills that all other airport employees have. Skills such as long term planning and forethought

My flight INTO Boston was delayed, now my flight is delayed OUT OF Boston, much more severely. This is evidently due to pre-planned runway work, which you would think they could have planned around. I will now be getting home at ~4am. I now have a personal vendetta against Boston Logan Airport.

Overall vibe for sure, but also more specifically, the stairs into the cars?? The fact that it splits up into 4 (!!!) lines at all? Some of the western stations have the thinnest platforms I have ever seen?

What is it with conference centers that they are allergic to having chairs and benches and just generally *any* location for people to sit down outside of panel rooms?

@gavinnewsom.bsky.social can still call a special session and include this bill so those barnacles who killed it have to put their names on the record. Big put up or shut up moment for a man who wants to be the President!

They should build a metro stop just for Porto's Bakery. Would clearly drive insane ridership

Clayton Becker @cnbecker14.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
The other (Bass) is treating transit as a complete afterthought and has only the most slopulist of ideas about what to do. And come November, we get one or the other. Completely insane, honestly, that the future of useful transit in LA comes down to a single election.

Clayton Becker @cnbecker14.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Looking at the respective transit platforms for Nithya Raman and Karen Bass is so nerve wracking. One (Raman) has an actual vision for a city where transit works. (And let me tell you, if you've lived in a place with great transit (I have) it's impossible to feel satisfied in a place without it.)
