Just to clarify: generally speaking I do not pick which Standups I'm on. I am either invited or I'm not for a particular episode. If I wasn't on an episode, that is usually because I wasn't invited, or was unavailable when it was being recorded.

Few people care more about performant code than @cmuratori.bsky.social. Casey is a down-to-earth programmer, game dev, performance nerd. A refreshing episode about why the basics (still) matter, and why learning to read Assembly remains useful for anyone who cares about performance: (cont'd)

If I was skilled with hardware, I would probably try something like that! Theoretically, you could carefully separate the numeric keypad part of an Amiga keyboard, and modify the wiring so that it became a TKL keyboard :)

Casey Muratori @cmuratori.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
You may be right, but the problem is that Win95-era keyboards tend to be form factors that I don't use anymore. They will all have a numeric keypad, for example (whereas I use tenkeyless these days). So I'm not sure if there's a solution there?

For people using AI in commercial game development: I'd be interested in hearing the best arguments as to why you think people should pay for the resulting game instead of pirating it. Concisely, if you pirated the inputs, why shouldn't they pirate the output?

(The problem is sometimes called "Reservoir Sampling", but I avoided this labeling for the video since non-rendering game dev applications of the technique tend to be more of a special case of reservoir sampling than the general problem definition.)

No, because unless you enable fast-math with a compiler switch, it will not change or rearrange floating point operations since the answer will change. Compilers generally don't replace operations unless the results will be the same, since they don't know if it matters to the program!

I'm also not sure what to make of the original statement in the article. 0.06% is actually huge: companies are sinking tens and hundreds of billions of dollars into AI. 0.06% of just $1bln is $600,000. What am I missing?

It was heartwarming to have so many people seek out our booth at comic conventions and ask when Book 3 will be available. We even twice had people come dressed as characters from the series, which was the wildest thing I think I've ever experienced!

For an indie comic with no marketing, we have been really happy with how well Meow the Infinite has been received. We are now well into the thousands of books sold, and are actually a bit worried that our Book 3 Kickstarter will be artificially limited by our stock of Book 2!

Casey Muratori @cmuratori.bsky.social · 12/03/2025
Illustration-wise, there are a few dozen pages left to draw. We anticipate these will be finished around June, which is when the Kickstarter will go live.

Because Meow the Infinite is an intricate story where every scene needed to be carefully planned in advance, the bulk of the writing has been complete for years. A few final scenes that we wanted to iterate on were completed last year.

I don't think the scaling is inherently a problem, because most IDE parts are decouplable. The problem is that the CS methods that are taught don't scale, and the ones that do scale are eschewed. It's a problem of our own creation.

Casey Muratori @cmuratori.bsky.social · 25/12/2024
They contribute only in the sense that the bigger the program is, the more chances you have to make a mistake in how it's designed. It is not an intrinsic property of complexity.
110
Casey Muratori @cmuratori.bsky.social · 21/12/2024
This is all completely false. The Visual Studio IDE was plenty fast in version 6 and earlier. That version supported all of the things you're talking about (multiple languages, SCC, variable formatting, remote debugging, etc.) Modern IDEs are slow because of bad programming, period.
