And interestingly, those with a high need for closure are the most likely to ghost and the most harmed when ghosted. Together, these findings offer clinicians and researchers a clearer picture of where technology helps support relationships, and where it gets in the way.

video chat and texting produce lower intimacy than in-person conversation, especially in groups, but deep-talk conversation can narrow this gap. And when relationships end, smartphones have enabled ghosting—ceasing contact without explanation—which hurts worse than direct rejection.

People systematically undervalue face-to-face interaction, preferring smartphones and television over conversation with strangers—even though talking to strangers reliably boosts mood. In both new and existing relationships, the medium matters:

ABSTRACT: As loneliness rates reach epidemic levels, understanding how social technologies shape relationships has never been more urgent. Across eleven studies (N = 4,405), this presentation examines how technologies support and undermine social connection at various relationship stages.
