Happy Monday you wonderful people!
Today's koan
Nothing Exists

Yamaoka, a young student, visited the master Dokuon and declared, "There is no mind, no body, no Buddha. Nothing exists. All is emptiness. Nothing is given or received."

Dokuon, smoking quietly, said nothing. Suddenly he struck Yamaoka with his bamboo pipe.

The young man flushed with anger.

"If nothing exists," Dokuon asked, "where did this anger come from?"

oh this pissed me right off.
During the interview at his corral, he declined to share sales records showing where the hundreds of horses he received went. Over the course of discussing his business, he did not mention any training or the challenges of finding owners for wild mustangs, but he spoke about five of the region’s slaughter traders, who he knew by name, and the current price of horse meat.

He denied selling mustangs to the traders.

He said it was wrong to see him as a bad guy. By reselling mustangs, he said, he had saved the government millions.

“Shouldn’t I be getting a thank you?” he asked.

It's Friday somewhere. Lemme do some Zen thinking to end the work week.
Today's koan
Right and Wrong

During a meditation retreat, a student was caught stealing. The others demanded his expulsion; the master Bankei ignored them.

When the student was caught again, the others threatened to leave en masse if nothing was done.

Bankei gathered them. "You are wise. You know what is right and wrong. You may go elsewhere to study. But this poor brother does not even know right from wrong. Who will teach him if I do not? He shall stay, even if all of you leave."

The thief wept, and the desire to steal left him forever.

Did I really though? So, strictly speaking I think you're looking at nicotine, in which case, that's correct. I think we also know that comes with a set of issues in itself. Recent study (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34141471).
This increase of catecholamines also underlies many benefits of nicotine on cognition (attention and focus mainly) while the acetylcholine mimicking may promote a nootropic effect inherently. In regards to addiction, the risk of nicotine and addiction is a measurement between how much nicotine is taken (with more nicotine being associated with greater risk) and the speed of nicotine reaching the brain ( with faster spikes in neural concentration being associated with both greater perceived benefits and greater risk of addiction). Gums and patches have less potential risk for addiction than do cigarettes (with inhalers in the middle) due to the speed nicotine reaches the brain. Acutely, potential side-effects of nicotine are similar to acute side-effects of other stimulants such as ephedrine, yohimbine, or caffeine due to increasing catecholamines. Over the long term, the side-effect profile of nicotine may rival ephedrine as those two retain a degree of catecholamine secretion over time (the other two losing efficacy in 2 weeks or less). There is currently insufficient evidence to suggest an 'optimal dose' of nicotine for non-smoking individuals. The study

This cross-sectional study in 50 nicotine smokers and 50 nonsmokers (average age of 24) assessed the participants' brain health using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and their cognitive function using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Automated Battery (CANTAB).

The CANTAB included attention-switching tasks (AST), which test the ability to attend to specific information while ignoring irrelevant information, pattern recognition (PRM), which tests short-term memory, and choice reaction time (CRT), which tests alertness and motor speed.

The results

The MMSE scores did not differ between the groups, but the smokers scored worse than the nonsmokers in nearly all the parameters of the AST and all of the parameters of the PRM and CRT CANTAB tests.
