Harbour, Swansea, Wales clevelandart.org/art/1996.353
A successful timber merchant in the Hackney area of London and photographer, Alfred Rosling is known for several bodies of photographic work. His earliest photographs were made for a stereoscope establishment, but he later became interested in taking landscape photographs and became very well connected with many British photographic circles. In addition to picturesque views of Surrey, he spent time in South Wales where Harbor, Swansea, Wales was taken. There he met John Dillwyn Llewelyn and likely the Reverend Calvert Richard Jones, Jr., as well as others in the Swansea photographic circle. His son-in-law, Frances Frith, published a number of Rosling's landscape prints.

Du Camp was the first photographer to depict the marvels of ancient Egypt. In 1849 a scholarly association commissioned the young writer to document Egyptian monuments and their hieroglyphics. He learned to photograph shortly before embarking for Egypt in the company of the young novelist Gustave Flaubert. In 1852 Du Camp published an album of photographs of Egypt, Nubia, Palestine, and Syria, which brought him widespread recognition. Just as Du Camp followed in the footsteps of earlier painters and scholars, later photographers like Beato often echoed his choices of subject matter.

Mrs. John R. Johnston clevelandart.org/art/2002.38
Active in the worlds of theather and music, Johnson was also a distinguished portrait painter, a remarkable photographer, and one of the supreme colorists of photographs. By the mid 1850s, he resided in Baltimore where he associated with Jesse H. Whitefurst, how was better known than Matthew Brady and one of the most important studio operators at that time.

This portrait is a tour-de-force of personal expression, both on the part of the sitter and artist. In the angled three-quarter-length pose, Mrs. Johnson, with head tilted, gazes directly toward the camera's lens. For the period, this portrait was extraordinarily spontaneous and informal, personal and sensual. Adding to the photograph's distinction, Johnson printed his wet collodion negative on salted paper, a rarity in early American photography.

Untitled clevelandart.org/art/1985.203
The son of a wealthy Parisian banker, Robert Demachy's financial independence enabled him to pursue his interests in music and art. Beginning in the 1880s, he made photographs in the pictorial style and in 1894 began to use the gum bichromate process, which allowed considerable handwork to be done on the print. Demachy was a prominent defender of the use of manipulative printing techniques, and wrote more than a thousand articles and numerous books on the technical processes and issues involved. With their soft details, reminiscent of Impressionist paintings, his photographs were greatly admired by his contemporaries.

Arab Musicians clevelandart.org/art/1995.236
Taken to catalogue and document cultural practices, both of these photographs were intended as portraits of professions or ethnographic types rather than portraits of individuals. Hart’s image was part of his subscription series <em>Universal Gallery of Peoples,</em> which sought “to reproduce through photography the national costumes that are disappearing rapidly before the advance of civilization, to preserve for people the flavor, and for artists the memory of what once was beautiful and picturesque.” An unidentified photographer captured the picturesque <em>pifferari,</em> country musicians who wandered European cities around Christmas playing before images of the Virgin and on the streets. They were a common theme for French and Italian painters and photographers in the 1840s and 1850s.

Mount Washington, Massachusetts, July 22, 1890 clevelandart.org/art/1994.279
At the turn of the 20th century, Redfield was a leading proponent of staging simple genre scenes outdoors, instead of being limited to a studio setting. Here, the Philadelphia-born photographer carefully positioned three children in the foreground of this picturesque landscape dominated by a split-rail and stone fence. The print features his interests in clarity and fidelity and atmospheric effects. In this rural scene, he used the warm, delicate tonal range of a platinum print to render subtle variations and nuances of light. For two decades around 1900, Redfield was a leading advocate of photography as fine art and was one of the founders of the Photo-Secession. He sought to convince an audience accustomed to viewing photographs as simple recorded fact that they were beautiful images able to convey emotion.

The Royal Stag clevelandart.org/art/1992.333
One of the earliest photographs in this exhibition, James Valentine’s Royal Stag possesses a rare spontaneity, both for photographs of this period and for still-life images in general. In photographing a royal stag (one with antlers of twelve or more branches), Valentine gave the animal the appearance of one that had just fallen in the bright light of midday. Because the technology of the day required a nearby darkroom where the exposed negative plate could be processed immediately, it is likely that the felled stag was arranged into its artistic pose by the photographer or his staff. Valentine was a distinguished topographical and landscape photographer, printer, and publisher whose Dundee-based company became the largest and best equipped in the United Kingdom. His accomplishments were recognized when in 1868 he was appointed Photographer to the Queen.

The Tiber, Tuileries Garden, Paris clevelandart.org/art/1994.201
Charles Nègre, a history painter by training, was a pioneering 19th-century French photographer. In 1859 he received government support to produce a series of fifty images of statuary in Paris's Tuileries Gardens. Although the project was never completed, Nègre did create a group of large-format glass negatives. This photograph represents one of a small number of unique prints from those negatives. The Tiber, a late 17th-century stone sculpture of the river god Tiber, is one of the garden's four water sculptures depicting water deities.

Rowing Home the Schoof-Stuff (from Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads, 1886, plate XXI) clevelandart.org/art/1983.206
Reacting against the theatrical, sentimental photogaphs made by his contemporaries, Peter Henry Emerson pursued a direct and more naturalistic form of photography. He discovered his subjects in familiar scenes from everyday life and captured them on film. This image was included among the 40 prints illustrating <em>Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads</em>, one of many books Emerson published on the marsh dwellers of East Anglia. In this photograph the word "schoof" refers to the sheaf of marsh plants that have been harvested to be dried and stored at home.

Alexandre Dumas père (1802-1870) clevelandart.org/art/1983.198
Nadar was a journalist, novelist, cartoonist, balloonist, lithographer, and, beginning in 1849, photographer. Like Brady’s establishments in America, Nadar’s Parisian studio quickly became a center for celebrity photography, selling compelling images of the major political and cultural figures of the time. Nadar avoided symbolic props and elaborate backgrounds; he let his sitters choose their own pose, putting them at ease enough to reveal glimpses of their true character. Dumas, one of France’s most popular authors, wrote <em>The Three Musketeers.</em> The year this portrait was made, he and Nadar were hoping to collaborate on a play, but their only joint production seems to have been this casual, intimate portrait.

Senator George Ellis Pugh of Ohio clevelandart.org/art/1997.194
Photographing prominent politicians or other celebrities was an effective advertisement for the quality and prestige of a portrait studio. Whitehurst Studio opened in 1849 and soon had galleries in 12 cities, including Cincinnati, producing 30,000 daguerreotypes a year. In 1857 its Washington branch advertised it had photographed the entire Congress. To outflank competition from cheaper operators, Whitehurst, in1854, became a pioneer in America in the production of paper photographs. This is a rare example of an American salted paper print, one of the early paper print processes quickly succeeded by albumen prints. Pugh, a Cincinnati lawyer, represented Ohio in the US Senate from 1855 to 1861.

Bridge of Shops, Srinagar, Kashmir clevelandart.org/art/1994.185
Taking up photography in his teens, Samuel Bourne soon achieved recognition for both his superb technical skills and keen aesthetic talents. When he sailed to India in late 1862, he left a banking career to pursue his passion for photography . He hoped to use his camera throughout the country and to write about his experiences for the British Journal of Photography. This charming photograph of a bridge filled with small huts demonstrates his creative ability to organize the random environment. His lively use of light and shade clearly defines the elements of architecture and landscape. The photographer allowed a favorite, early interest in water to dominate this picturesque image of Jaipur, which was founded in 1727 by Maharajah Jai Singh II. By the beginning of the 21st century, this small town had developed into a commercial city with a population of well over two million.
