Portrait of Hugh Hope clevelandart.org/art/1991.133
Raeburn painted directly on the canvas without any preliminary drawing, often giving his works an informal, spontaneous air. Although greatly influenced by his English predecessor Joshua Reynolds, Raeburn worked in a looser style, more like the work of his younger contemporary Thomas Lawrence. Raeburn painted this portrait of Edinburgh native Hugh Hope around 1810 before Hope departed for India, where he worked as a civil servant.

Portrait of Charlotte and Sarah Carteret-Hardy clevelandart.org/art/1942.642
Charlotte Savery Carteret-Hardy (1782–1850) and Sarah Carteret-Hardy (1780v1808) were the daughters of Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Carteret-Hardy of the regiment known as the York Fuseliers. Charlotte became Mrs. Ralph Price in 1805, and Sarah married the topographer Daniel Lysons in 1801, the year this picture was painted. This work remained in the Hardy family until 1887.

Willows and Farmhouse at Sainte-Catherine-lès-Arras clevelandart.org/art/1916.1047
With its quiet water and sky, fluffy trees, and other foliage flecked with light, this picture exemplifies the style that won Corot success with a wide public. It was painted during the artist's stay at Arras (about 100 miles north of Paris) in 1871.

A Calling clevelandart.org/art/1996.272
Seated on a stone step in the countryside, a young girl has realized that her calling in life is to be an artist. Bouguereau was famous for his innovative depictions of children. In 1900 a critic wrote, "[F]ew artists have represented childhood with more tenderness, charm, and spirit than Bouguereau . . . [H]e has invented the most picturesque, the most pleasing, the most original scenes of an almost endless variety." Bouguereau was no less famous for his remarkably life-like images. Here he convincingly captures the girl's rough clothing, soft skin, and intense gaze. Bouguereau painted this work in La Rochelle, a harbor city on France's west coast. During the later years of his life, Bouguereau—by then wealthy and famous—made a habit of spending summers in La Rochelle. There the artist lived in a mansion he owned near the port, working in a greenhouse he had converted into a studio or in the countryside. While in La Rochelle, Bouguereau chose his models from among farm workers, families of local fishermen, or his own servants.

Dr. Johann Henning Kjetil Hjardemaal clevelandart.org/art/1987.51
The sitter (1812-1844) was born on the island of Saint Thomas, at that time a colony in the Danish West Indies. He was sent to Copenhagen to study medicine and later set up practice at Satrup in Schleswig, then part of Denmark. For health reasons, he returned with his wife to the Virgin Islands, where they both died in 1844.

The Curious One clevelandart.org/art/1977.116
Here a young man uses a ladder to climb over a garden wall. The sign at his right translates into "School for Young Ladies under the Direction of Mrs. Wachsam"—wachsam being the German word for "watchful." Apparently, overcome by curiosity, the man cannot resist his desire to see the young women concealed behind the wall. Scenes with amorous, sometimes voyeuristic overtones are common in the work of Mongin. The artist also seems fascinated with depicting the exact details of his settings. In 1824, a critic who saw The Curious One wrote that Mongin's paintings are "portraits of houses coated in plaster, garden trees, almost trivial details, and this pleases me greatly. Full of naiveté, this is what I need in a landscape, as in a representation of man's actions." The critic's comments clearly demonstrate his appreciation for Mongin's work, as well as the artist's belief in the inherent relationship between nature and man.

The Farm at the Entrance of the Wood clevelandart.org/art/1978.73
One of the most celebrated female artists of the 19th century, Bonheur established an international reputation by exhibiting at the Paris Salons. Empress Eugènie, wife of Napoleon III, visited her studio to personally confer the Legion of Honor, making Bonheur the first woman to receive the award. This painting may have been inspired by the rustic houses in the vicinity of the Forest of Fontainebleau, where Bonheur lived for more than 40 years.

Beach Scene clevelandart.org/art/1917.63
On a beach where a strong breeze moves off the water from left to right, figures of French women, men, and children in chic Parisian dress stroll, sit, chat, or take donkey rides. The activities depicted (promenades, socializing, riding, sandbox playing) are the same as those enjoyed by residents of London or Paris. At the right, the dog suggests that these are vacationers rather than tourists seeking to recreate their urban pastimes at the seashore. Painted outdoors, this composition is typical of Boudin's beach scenes in the 1860s in its low-lying horizon, cloud-filled sky, and figures ranged across the middle ground. By scattering the figures over the surface and not closing off the scene with framing elements, the artist created the impression of a partial view of a much larger scene.

Mme L... (Laure Borreau) clevelandart.org/art/1962.2
Painted during Courbet's stay in the Saintonge region of western France, this portrait depicts Laure Borreau, owner of a fabric store and ladies confectionery. As the leader of the Realist movement in France, Courbet aimed to convey his democratic and socialist ideals by portraying ordinary people in a truthful, unidealized manner. While considering himself a radical innovator, Courbet nonetheless exhibited this portrait under the title Mme L... at the Paris Salon of 1863.

Romaine Lacaux clevelandart.org/art/1942.1065
This painting may be Renoir's earliest signed canvas. Its sensitive display of color and light communicates an ideal of delicate, youthful beauty. The luminous tones of the background drapery and of the child's white blouse result from the artist's careful observation of reflected light and color on translucent materials. The delicate nuances of color, particularly in the young girl's face, reveal Renoir's previous training as a decorator of porcelain. He painted this portrait, commissioned by the vacationing Lacaux family, during his stay at an artist's colony in the village of Barbizon, near Paris.

The Death of General Colbert clevelandart.org/art/1980.285
In 1809, the popular young French military hero General Auguste Colbert died at a battle in Spain. The following year, Schnetz depicted the moment of Colbert's death. This is the study for a much larger painting exhibited at the Paris Salon, but now lost. The exploits of Napoleon and his army were popular subjects for French artists whose work was shown in official exhibitions.

Tannhäuser clevelandart.org/art/1916.1038
This painting is based on act I of Richard Wagner's 1845 opera Tannhäuser, a medieval tale of the struggle between sacred and profane love. Seduced by Venus, the deeply religious minstrel Tannhäuser is seen reveling in the pleasures of the goddess's court before guilt compels him to return to the real world. The sensuality of the story, and indeed of Wagner's music, is matched by Fantin-Latour's thick repetitive brushwork, which seems to draw a dreamy veil over figures and landcape. This painting was shown at the Paris Salon exhibition of 1886. An earlier version had been shown more than 20 years before.

Study of a Reclining Nude clevelandart.org/art/1939.63
The languorous, sensuous pose of this woman is strongly reminiscent of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres's popular paintings of odalisques, female slaves, and concubines in Turkish harems. Much of this canvas has been left thinly painted or entirely blank, suggesting that it was a figural study rather than a finished work of art. The French Academy in the 1800s viewed the depiction of the nude as the ultimate measure of an artist's skill. Because models changed poses frequently, students had to work quickly and without embellishment. Here the artist completed only those areas needed to emphasize the contours of the model's body.

A poet and dramatist, William Henley (1849–1903) was the editor of the British Magazine of Art from 1882 to 1886. He enthusiastically introduced Rodin's sculpture to his readers, even before the artist's work was well known in Paris. To thank him, Rodin made this bust.

The Red Kerchief clevelandart.org/art/1958.39
In its early stages, this composition contained two figures seated inside the room on either side of the window. Monet radically altered the composition by painting over the figures. They were replaced by an image of the artist's favorite model---his wife Camille, who passes outside the window in a red cape. Intense light---reflected from the snow-covered landscape---floods the room, obliterating details along the walls and floor. The off-center window frame and the blurriness achieved through sketchy brushstrokes suggest the scanning movement of the artist's eye as he viewed this scene. Contrasted with cold blues and silver whites, Camille's red cape draws the viewer's attention through the glass and into a swift exchange of glances, registering a brief moment in time. This painting evidently held special meaning for Monet, for he kept it with him until his death in 1926.

Ruin by the Sea clevelandart.org/art/1979.57
The dark, ruined villa in this painting is made especially mysterious by the strange cypress trees tossed by the wind. A nervous green light flickers through the scene. Influenced by German Romantic art of the early 1800s, Böcklin was preoccupied with dreamlike images suggestive of death.

The Artist in His Room at the Villa Medici, Rome clevelandart.org/art/1978.51
In 1817, Cogniet won the Prix de Rome for history painting, a state prize that allowed him to live and work at the Villa Medici for a period of five years. The helmet, shield, and swords depicted on the left wall near the doors that lead to the studio refer to the expectation that Cogniet would produce a history painting each year to send back to Paris for review. On the back of this painting the artist wrote (in French): "My room at the reception of my first letter from my family, 1817." The open window with the landscape view may reveal Cogniet's true interest, however, for shortly after arriving in Rome he wrote: "You ask me what struck me the most, ancient sculpture, painting of the masters, or the physiognomy of the Romans. What struck me more than all that were the beauties of nature, not only of the country I now live in, but of all those I passed through since the French frontier."

Madame Case clevelandart.org/art/1967.126
This painting may depict the wife of the artist's close friend, writer Jules Cass. In a letter written after her death, Cass asked the artist to paint her portrait from an enlarged photograph. "My dear friend," Cass wrote, "would you preserve the only face which, from now on, can bring me some little joy, if one can use this word for a sentiment mixed with so much suffering." Carrière emphasized the poetic mood by placing the shadowy figure in a vague, dreamlike space. Known for his evocative paintings of women and children, Eugène Carrière was loosely associated with the French Symbolist movement, which aimed at expressing inner, spiritual life and emotions rather than the outward appearance of physical reality.

Still Life with Pipe and Matches clevelandart.org/art/1980.254.1
The artist was a smoker. In this composition the place of honor is given to a pipe made in Austria around the middle of the 19th century. It is made of precious materials--meerschaum, silver, amber, horn or lacquered wood--that are carefully fashioned, all lovingly rendered by the artist. The cord with a tassel (perhaps of horsehair) is not just a decorative element, it is a security measure in case the precious bowl of the pipe becomes detached from the pipe stem. The pipe is surrounded by ordinary smoker's accessories--a cigar case, a snuffbox, and a match holder in porcelain--all placed on a Turkish rug.

The Latin inscription translates: "Use, not abuse." In 1858 Decamps was 55 years old and not in the best of health. Perhaps a doctor had advised him to reduce his consumption of tobacco.

Fight between a Tiger and a Buffalo clevelandart.org/art/1949.186
Having never ventured outside France, Rousseau derived his jungle scenes from reading travel books and visiting the Paris botanical garden. He placed this imaginary scene of a tiger attacking a buffalo within a fantastic jungle environment in which botanical accuracy was of little importance (note the bananas growing upside down). Here, sharply outlined hothouse plants are enlarged to fearsome proportions. Rousseau was working on this painting while imprisoned for fraud in December 1907. Officials granted him an early release to finish it for exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants, where this major composition, one of the artist's largest and most important, appeared in March 1908. A self-taught artist and retired customs inspector, Rousseau was admired by Pablo Picasso and other avant-garde artists for his originality and the naïve purity of his vision.

Boats at Berck-sur-Mer clevelandart.org/art/1940.534
Ever since his childhood, Manet spent almost every summer at the seashore. At age 16, after failing the entrance exam for the naval academy, he embarked as an apprentice on a training ship, traveling as far away as Rio de Janeiro. The sea would always capture his imagination, and in 1864 he painted several seascapes. This painting was made nearly ten years later, while the artist was staying in Berck-sur-Mer, near Boulogne. Exploring light and movement, he rapidly sketched the sails of the countless ships that dance in the wind on blue-green waves highlighted with white. Manet even added a slight curve to the horizon, thus conveying an impression of infinite space, despite the painting's small size.

Lazarillo de Tormes and His Blind Master clevelandart.org/art/1980.282
The subject of this painting comes from the 16th-century Spanish novel Lazarillo de Tormes. This tells the story of Lazarillo, a poor servant boy who worked for an impoverished blind man. Abused by his master, and never given enough to eat or drink, Lazarillo is forced to fend for himself. According to the story, he steals wine by drinking it from a straw directly from the blind man's jug. This painting relates to a cultural movement known as espagnolisme, the French interest in Spanish art and literature. Especially popular during the 1850s, espagnolisme focused upon realistic, often down-trodden characters such as Lazarillo. Instead of finding them naïve or foolishly humorous, artists such as Ribot related to their alienation from society and found inspiration in the detailed descriptions of their rough, lowly lifestyles.
