Also labour from the people mining rare Earth minerals, the people in the Global South who toil to clean the data and supervise models live as human-in-the-loop, the people building/ cleaning data centers... the labour theft is so extensive it's not realistic that this would have been feasible.

One of the most upsetting things for people trained in formal computational theory, who are not AI boosters, to witness is how claims about the outputs of systems with no formal specification are taken as if they are indicative of formally linked capacities, such as the ability to add; see thread:

Journalists, in the main, will not report on this. They are both bought off and in full agreement with the white supremacist ideas at the core of TESCREAL ideology (which is not an innovation, but continuation of the fascist ideas at the heart of western thought).

Whenever a tech propagandist says 'AI' will kill us all (or, as Gates recently said, a billion people) they're lying as part of a profit gambit *but also* telling everyone that western elites are willing to wage nuclear war rather than relinquish a micron of power.

It's good indeed, that there's pushback from a variety of people (and not only those of us who're technologists or scientists). I think of this as a war however. The enemy commands the media heights; our actions are rearguard and on enemy terrain. I don't counsel despair but strategic awareness

Extremely sexist and unhinged superficially so-called anti AI people and spaces exist. Probably because loads of sexists exist, but we don't have to tolerate them. Being anti-fascist should be a low bar, and being against sexism isn't difficult to maintain at a community-level unless it's tolerated.
