If you're like me and a little allergic to "dated" or "different" interfaces KDE Plasma 6 based distros will feel like a modern OS. For example Linux Mint is great but for me the interface feels too dated. Also Wayland and NVidia works great for me in EndeavourOS / Kubuntu 26.04.

Cloaked Alien @cloakedalien.tv · 10/07/2026

PSA: If you're Linux-curious, even for gaming, you don't need to "wait for SteamOS" or install Bazzite or Pop_OS. Most modern distros will pretty much just let you install Steam, download and hit play. Personal faves are Kubuntu and EndeavourOS (with KDE) #linux #gaming

Mind you, I'm in Sweden. I have no idea how prices have evolved in other regions over the years. But adjusted for inflation, if Street Fighter 2 (SNES) had been released today it would allegedly have been around 1250 SEK (120 USD).

110

Cloaked Alien @cloakedalien.tv · 25/06/2026

Indeed. But the costs involved in developing a modern game is probably a lot higher. Not defending the price hikes mind you. I just remember the cost of games staying the same / going down a lot from SNES and onwards, and I saved up for most of my games myself.

110

Cloaked Alien @cloakedalien.tv · 25/06/2026

Biggest steal isn't the prices these days imho, it's that we're getting robbed of owning our games physically together with boxes and manuals. Whatever physical we get these days is mostly placebo - we lost that war many years ago.

120

Cloaked Alien @cloakedalien.tv · 24/06/2026

I paid the equivalent of $60-70 for SNES games back in the 90s (699 SEK was not unusual), and that's not counting with inflation. Not defending price hikes but games have objectively become way, way, way more complex without prices going up for more than 30 years. We've been spoiled for a long time.

I 100% believe this. My mother, who's about to turn 70, has been playing these murder mystery hidden object games for 10+ years now. Only type of game she plays but the mere fact that she plays them despite being very anti-tech is amazing. I'll always make sure she has a working computer to play on!

I've managed to refurbish and calibrate my Vectrex and I also bought an old 1980 CRT TV a couple of years back that I troubleshooted and fixed with some help from people I know. It's scary, but perfectly doable if you've read up and stay patient =)

020

Cloaked Alien @cloakedalien.tv · 06/02/2026

That said I feel like most things that aren't a broken tube SHOULD be fixable =)

Cloaked Alien @cloakedalien.tv · 06/02/2026

I had a Dell Trinitron monitor I had to chuck. It was extremely bright and you couldn't get it down. There was a firmware hack I tried but that just made it behave weirdly, couldn't find a single person having fixed that exact model (other models you could solder in replacement components).
