I've never watched The Shining. Perhaps I will with the kids this evening. So heartwarming!

ArtAsiaPacific reported last week that a coalition of Philippine artists and creatives have been organising a series of activities aimed at preventing the establishment of a 1,600-hectare AI manufacturing hub planned by Pax Silica, a US-led initiative. www.artasiapacific.com/news/philipp...

Said Hopkins ‘"That Temple Drake, now, there was a thing. Just give me a nice un-standardized wretch like Temple three times a year! Give me the complex ladies, and I'll interpret the daylights out of them."

Miriam Hopkins was a relative newcomer when she was cast as a judge’s wayward granddaughter in ‘The Story of Temple Drake’ (1933). Far from loving the frivolous roles that would best fit her bubbly blondness, Hopkins was delighted to be cast as Temple.

At the beginning of The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), Jill Lawrence (Edna Best) breaks all of the conventions of motherhood and being a wife. She openly flirts with another man in the company of her husband, and does not seem at all maternal towards her daughter Betty (Nova Pilbeam).

The movie so good that Alfred Hitchcock made it twice - The Man Who Knew Too Much. The first one was in 1934, and side by side with the 1956 version proves itself the ‘racier’ offering. I’m going to do a deep-dive this week into how & what it tells us about cinema reflecting society at both points

A Viz letter accompanying a very small picture of the new issue: School teachers really are amazing aren't they? Thirty-five years ago, Mr Woodley told me I would never amount to anything and fair play to him, he was absolutely spot on. Dave, Cape Cod

Munson was to die by suicide in 1955. A sad end to a career that encompassed Broadway and Gone With The Wind.

While not quite PC now, Ona Munson’s haughty performance as ‘Mother’ Gin Sling in Josef Von Sternberg’s The Shanghai Gesture (1941) adds much to the film’s jaded atmosphere. There’s a connection between her and Gene Tierney’s Poppy that all the opium in the world cannot erase.

Because this moral censorship was not in force in 1931/1932, Hui Fei’s revenge murder is seen as well-deserved, and Shanghai Lily gets the guy in the end. #oldhollywood #hollywood #hollywoodhistory #oldmovies #movies #blackandwhite #marlenedietrich #annamaywong

The ‘fallen women’ of 1932’s Shanghai Express, played by Anna May Wong and Marlene Dietrich, would be an impossibility once the Hays Code was implemented in 1934. They would have to be seen to be on a moral journey, and punished for their ‘transgressions’.

Mrs O’Brien (Anita Sharp-Bolster) tries to warn the feckless David, but carrying on with Valerie Stockley (Sandra Dorne) proves to be a fatal mistake. Not a top-drawer film, it’s supernatural aspect provides enough interest without requiring too much of an emotional investment.

The House in Marsh Road (1960) went straight to television in the United States, where it was known as Invisible Creature. The creature in question is Patrick the Poltergeist who takes a dim view of David (Tony Wright)’s behaviour towards his long suffering wife Jean (Patricia Dainton).

What is clear even a quarter of the way through this is that Truss’s career trajectory after her 49 days in ‘power’ is fuelled by spite, arrogance, incredulity and a complete inability to laugh at herself.

William Randolph Hearst’s newspapers had a field day with stories about the trial of Roscoe Arbuckle for the murder of Virginia Rappe in 1921. Hearst himself said that the scandal ‘sold more newspapers than the sinking of the Lusitania’. Arbuckle had been a fan favourite, and was finally acquitted .
