Cattle often pass through multiple farms before slaughter. And even companies that screen their direct suppliers often don’t know whether they have indirect suppliers linked to illegal deforestation, forced labor, or invasions of Indigenous lands.
111
Climate Rights International @climaterights.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Companies that do not meet these requirements could face exclusion from the EU market, administrative penalties, and civil liability claims under national law in EU member states. For companies sourcing beef or leather from Brazil, meeting them could be a real challenge.
100
Climate Rights International @climaterights.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Taken together, the laws will increasingly require companies sourcing cattle products from Brazil to be able to trace their supply chains and identify and address deforestation, forced labor, and other serious environmental and human rights risks.
100
Climate Rights International @climaterights.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Our new report examines the combined impact these three supply-chain laws could impact companies that source beef or leather from Brazil.
100
Climate Rights International @climaterights.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Why? Because the EUDR is only part of the story. Leather will still be covered by two other EU laws: the Forced Labour Regulation (FLR), and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). And beef from the same cattle will be covered by all three.
110
Climate Rights International @climaterights.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
New CRI Report! The European Commission's decision to exclude leather from the EU Deforestation Regulation is a setback. But this exclusion isn’t final — and even if it goes through, European companies sourcing leather from places like Brazil are not off the hook. 🧵
