We’re excited to share that nearly every candidate CARI endorsed won their primary race! That’s a huge win for climate action in Rhode Island.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen: volunteering for campaigns, talking to your neighbors, and, most importantly, getting out to vote!

Yesterday, clean energy advocates gathered for a press event to speak to the concerns and consequences that would follow if Governor McKee’s FY27 budget was passed as it stands today. Renewables are not to blame for our states high utility bills. Clean energy is affordable energy.

Here’s our ask: Will you write a short letter to explain why this project is important? Every letter makes a difference. Our team has pulled together sample copy to use in your letter, and you can find it here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
On a lime green background with two white windmills on the bottom right and left of graphic. It reads:

What you can do

What: Write a quick letter for comment in support of granting the permits.
How: Comments can be emailed directly to: cstaff1@crmc.ri.gov with the subject line "2023-02-090 Public Comment."
When: The public comment period for SOuthCoast Wind's CRMC permit is currently underway, and will close on Monday, January 20th.

Southcoast Wind Needs Your HelpOn lime green background, and then the text is dark on a white layer. It reads:

EXAMPLE #1: Climate/Reliability
Subject: 2023-02-090 Public Comment

Dear CRMC,

I am writing to submit comments on the Category B Assent and Freshwater and Wetlands permit submitted for the SouthCoast Wind Project, currently under consideration by the Rhode Island Coastal Resource Management Council. As a Rhode Island resident, I strongly urge you to approve the application and continue to move the project forward.

Climate change and rising energy demands pose significant challenges for Rhode Islanders, but there is a solution right off our shore- a massive renewable energy resource capable of transforming how we power our region. The SouthCoast Wind project offers an opportunity to reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels and improve grid reliability by providing a locally produced source of power.

By integrating SouthCoast Wind into our energy grid, we can create a more stable system that’s capable of meeting the increased demands of our electrified future while supporting the state’s ambitious carbon reduction and renewable energy goals. While the short-term, off-season construction may present some inconveniences, it is a small and necessary investment for the significant, long-term benefits this project offers.

In light of the long-term climate, reliability and economic benefits offered by major offshore wind projects such as SouthCoast Wind, I trust that CRMC will carefully review and appropriately act on the Category B Assent application to move the project forward.

Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,
011

URGENT: SouthCoast Wind Project is gathering public support as it heads to the final state approvals. This project will provide 1.2 gigawatts of clean energy to Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Now, all letters are due in this coming Monday, January 20th. We need your help.
Southcoast Wind Needs Your Help
The SouthCoast Wind project needs public support to get its final RI state permits!

Say yes to Wind graphic

Climate Action Rhode IslandOn a lime green background and dark blue letters, it reads:

The SouthCoast Wind Project has two permits currently under review by the Rhode Island Coastal Resoures Management Council (CRMC): Category B Assent and Freshwater Wetlands Permit.

SouthCoast Wind has already undergone extensive review through parallel permitting processes at the local, state, and federal level, and has already been granted permits in many of these proceedings.

Receiving approval for these two permits would cover the full scope of project activities in RI State Waters, as well as several key activities onshore in Portsmouth.

The primary responsibility of the CRMC is the preservation and protection of Rhode Island's coastal resources. Climate change is the single biggest threat to these resources, and a rapid transition to renewables like offshore wind is the only way to truly preserve and protect Rhode Island's coast.
