Climate change has come for our forests, says the New York Times. Read more: www.nytimes.com/2026... #climatechange
On a gentle slope on the western side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where a towering green canopy of ponderosa pines had stood for centuries, wildfires have transformed roughly 1,700 acres into brown, bare shrubland.

That forest is gone for good, scientists say. Spiky shrubs and poison oak have replaced the majestic trees. All that is left of the pines are burned logs and dead branches.

It’s part of a wider transformation that’s taking place across the Western United States, from Oregon to New Mexico, as bigger and hotter wildfires sweep through forests that have not evolved to survive such high-intensity blazes and a warmer climate. Recent studies estimate that as much as 40 percent of Western conifer forests will turn into shrubland by 2100 as a result.

How Trump Is Trying to Crush California’s Environmental Policies
At least a half-dozen federal agencies have taken action against the state that has led the nation in environmental protections.

The stakes are high. Because of its market muscle as the world’s fourth largest economy, California’s environmental regulations have influenced the manufacturers of automobiles and other consumer goods. And its green policies have spread to some other states in what’s known as the “California effect.”

But President Trump has marshaled the full power of the federal government to clamp down on the state’s climate initiatives. He has been vocal in his contempt for Gov. Gavin Newsom of California, a Democrat and possible 2028 presidential contender whom he refers to as “Gavin Newscum.”

Nearly two decades in the making, SunZia — a $11-billion New Mexico wind-and-transmission project — is now online, sending new clean power to Arizona and California.
Spanning 916 turbines and a 550-mile high-voltage line, the project can power one million homes and has already helped drive record wind generation on California’s grid.
