Ernst Cassirer, especially his 'Myth of the State' should be at least as well-known as Heidegger, Sartre, and The Frankfurt School. That is all.

Trump and Hegseth and apocalyptic white evangelicals: Making America barbaric again. The magnitude of the malignant normality (the great Robert Jay Lifton's term) is difficult to comprehend in real time, but it is real and it is here.

"They're selling postcards of the hanging They're painting the passports brown Yeah, the beauty parlor's filled with sailors The circus is in town..." — Bob Dylan, Desolation Row, 1966 One of Dylan's most powerful songs, and never more relevant than now.
Dylan's opening line, 'They're selling postcards of the hanging..." is not a metaphor. From the late 1870s to around 1930, photographs and postcards of both legally determined executions and lynchings of African-Americans were popular in the United States.

Those who don't know or lack an ethical compass when assessing the past rush like crazed lemmings blindly back into it.

Image: "Hanging of Joseph Brassell and George Andrew for murders of Russell and John J. Allison of Putnam County”. J. Fletch Woodward, March 27, 1878. Cookeville, Tennessee.

An estimated 5,000 to 10,000 people came to witness the spectacle.

All the alleged "news" from the Ukraine betrayal to so-called ambassadors resignations? All of this is outrageous, none of this is surprising. No hepatomancy, no tea leaves necessary. Constitutions are fragile things. Use responsibly.

As the US attempts to strip naturalized citizens of their rights, as ice vans roam the streets carrying blockheads rather than blocks of ice, it is worth stating that the moral turpitude of US evangelical Xisn leaders is on the same level as that of those who led the Inquisition.

All your life the odd person out, self-loathing, only to realize you were the one wfio saw through and saw more clearly than those within your world. You paid the price of deference and assuming those who were older, those who were "just teasing" you were superior, wiser, more knowledgeable.

There is a perverse and bizarre bloodlust in certain strains of Christianity (Are you washed in the blood of the lamb? — WTF?). Pete Hegseth is but one iteration of this curious aspect of the religion"s origins and differs not all from the audiences watching gladiator spectacles in the Coliseum.

When the real society of the spectacle turns and shouts back at Guy Debord, all Jack Nicholson style, 'You want spectacle, I'll show you spectacle!' Public crucifixions: just another day in the US that the apocalypytic evangelicals built. There will be, there must be, blood.

I know this is a reaction to a song that came out decades ago, but I just want to say to U2, and Bono specifically, that there is no shame in eating from a can. ;) In fact a certain California-based store sells tins of dolmades and tins of seasoned chickpeas that are amazing eaten in this manner.

And the apocalypytic evangelical element of the populist right is a big part of that appeal. It began long before Trump. One could argue it began with Billy Graham and his televised crusades.

What he is good at, as with all demagogues, authoritarians, and fascists, is one thing: destruction. With a casino, who gives a damn? With a country, it will take some time to recover.

“The scale, Charlie, is what brings the people. The opulence, the size, the everything is really what’s going to make the Taj Mahal the most successful hotel anywhere in the world..." — Trump to ABC News' Charlie Gibson, 1990. The words change, but the bullshit is always the same.

You cannot read all the essays and books and speeches about the brilliance of the US Constitution and the tripartite system of governance and then read the daily headlines without thinking something is more than rotten in the state of America.

And some wonder why and how the US evangelicals support this vile human. It's a feature, not a bug. The SBC and the other Christian groups that put him in power share his misogyny, his patriarchal authoritianism. They are, despite surface appearances, cut from the same moldy, moth-ridden cloth.

You are right of course, and further, the definition of elite becomes problematic. The true elite in assets don't give a shit either way. Further, their children will be admitted by legacy or other means to the institution of their choice.

Yes, but we really need the old Republicans, the Eisenhower Republicans to do even a third of what needs to be done. I agree with you. That's where I'm at a log jam. How does a country do this that has only one functioning secular political party in country that needs at least two??

This is the double bind: human institutions are inherently evil (except for their tribal group) and even if they weren't, the Christian gods have preordained history anyway. Such a double bind also creates - coincidentally - a perfect exploitive space for late stage capitalism and grifters.
