finished Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories: 1904 Like the previous installments, very cosy and sweet, but suffers from a lack of character development due to each story being so short turning them into "here's something nice that happened, the end". 6/10

5. you can't discount "it's their fetish" either. Elves are usually attractive and "attractive people suffering" is a subject of sexual interest for many. Whether it comes across as a harmless fantasy (no pun intended) or creepy incel shit is probably super context-dependent, but it is a thing

4. again as @athanassia.bsky.social pointed out, "protagonist beats someone with more natural skill and more practice" is a way to have your protagonist show off (either as an earned showcase of progress or an unearned "look how awesome my guy is") and elves are obvious candidates for this

3. a lot of people like Tolkien but don't understand why/how he was successful and clumsily try to imitate what he had, thinking that "elves are dying out and everything sucks for them" is sufficient to capture the vibe. Writing good tragedy is hard.

2. A lot of authors aren't very skilled. They realize that "powerful/haughty character loses or suffers" is a powerful narrative moment, but either overuse it until it loses impact or don't realize that it's not an original idea anymore and write like they're the first ones to think of it

1b. elves are often written to be "human-like, but better". When done poorly, it's extremely grating (Eragon being the first example that comes to mind) and even when done well, it makes some people insecure to imagine that humans aren't the best at something

best story: "In the Belly of the Beast" by William King, great action and surprisingly good character development with Space Wolves investigating a Tyranid ship 9/10 worst story: "Emperor's Grace" by Alex Hammond. One of the main characters was very annoying and the plot uninspired 5/10

finished Into the Maelstrom ( #warhammer40k anthology) obs. some of the stories are better than others, but a few were pretty good. Almost entirely Space Marines + Guard focused, a bit of Chaos, but basically no Xenos or other human-focused stories 7/10 overall

I think one of the hardest things to learn as an artist is accepting that not every piece will be great. Some will be just okay, some will kinda suck, but finish them anyway. Get things done. One mediocre piece doesn't define your skill
