Two big recent self-hosting discoveries. First, the excellent BookOrbit, which has replaced Calibre, Calibre-Web, Komga, and Audiobookshelf in my stack. Second, Quartermaster, which can be found at www.qmstack.com, has completely blown me away across iOS, tvOS, and the companion container.

My son turns 13 tomorrow. How time flies! He had a fun gaming party with his D&D crew this weekend, and his big gift was a new Framework laptop, which we assembled together before installing Linux, at his request. Good taste, that boy of mine!

Solved my unskippable ad problem in the ESPN app. Wrote a little app that uses the Apple TV APIs to leap over each break when I tap a button on my phone. Suck it, ESPN.

I'm rethinking my approach to window management / workspaces. I have been using macOS' Spaces and Hammerspoon for years, but its clunky. I've settled on FlashSpace and Moom instead and I'm really liking it. Much more efficient and it works great for switching between local and remote sessions.

Discovered that if you connect two Macs using a Thunderbolt cable and set up a p2p network, Parsec at 5K is nearly undetectable for day to day tasks. Even when playing videos it’s solid.

A friend of mine works in AI and thinks bad things are about to happen. He sold his home and moved his family out the country. He said that if you own a home in a walkable San Francisco neighborhood near a taqueria with good veggie options, you should sell your home for super cheap right now.

I don't have their code so I can't pinpoint the bug, but it wasn't restricted just to Tailscale. Many long-lived TCP connections would silently stop passing traffic after 1-5 minutes. No TCP reset, the socket just wedges - send buffer fills and eventually the connection times out. Weird.

After some testing I determined that tailscaled was having its long-polling connections to controlplane.tailscale.com silently terminated, causing flapping and intermittent failures. Turned out to be a bug introduced by Eero in their firmware, which they have now resolved.

About a month ago I upgraded both of my Eero networks to the latest firmware. Nodes on my tailnet started to show as offline even though I could still connect to them via their tailnet IP.

If you’re a Tailscale user with Eero mesh, you may have noticed nodes on your tailnet constantly losing contact with the Tailscale control plane. I worked with Eero to diagnose and reproduce the issue and they’ve pushed a new firmware version that fixes the problem. You’re welcome ☺️

I pay ESPN for their streaming service. Just now getting a chance to watch the Miami game and am trying to catch up, but they have unskippable 3 minute ad breaks at every single opportunity. Such bullshit. I think I’m just going to cancel and stream from sketchy sources instead.
