#metalsky - The legendary bassist for Judas Priest, Ian Hill, the only member to stay continuously for the band's entire 57-year run, is retiring. Please play some Judas Priest today, in his honor; + in thanks for his steadfast devotion. 🙏 youtu.be/I9PjOhz3FSM?...

What, he can't spell "lobbyist"? Or "sinecure"?

It's not a "fetish"; it's literally how politics is done. Doubt it? Watch the billionaires; they do it all the time to their party. That's why their party never slacks on trying to deliver for them. Their whip is money; ours is presence + speech. Your demand for deference is myopic.

Those aren't endgames. They're gained through conflict + struggle; + only kept the same way. Part of that is holding your own side's feet to the fire, when you need to. Give up that part + you'll find over time that your "good things" start to leak away.

Sure, for you. But as we've seen; no policy is permanent. It must be fought for perpetually; especially if it benefits workers instead of billionaires.

Samuel Goldwyn comes to mind (the "G" in MGM). Also the "Warner Brothers" were real guys.

No, it doesn't. The day you "win" is only the beginning of a different phase. There is no endpoint to the continuous argument that democracy consists of.

Endlessly critiquing power is what one should be doing, honestly. It's one of the basic dynamics of participating in politics. "Victory" implies that there's some endgame; which there ain't.

Please stop telling musicians to "write great songs". No song is created "great"; one only becomes so through the confluence of time, conditions, + the minds of the people that hear it. We as writers + performers are < 1/3 of the equation; + we're doing our best. The catalyst is always you.

There is also a Hank Williams IV, son of III. At this point, it's a heritable title; like a Pope or sumo referee (gyoji).

Possible. His heirs might have sold his catalog to a company who specializes in getting "sync licenses" for commercial use, etc.

Probably, yes. Even as a conventional rock band, we sound just a little bit different; a little more space in the mix, compared to the maximum-density mix of nearly all our peers. We're 4 guys who sound like 4 guys, where others sound like 10.

One of the basic textbooks of heavy metal music here; almost every player used to learn this song very early, + it was often one of the first songs a new band would play together in practice.

Things you don't leave behind in the bargain bin: a 1972 Sunnyland Slim on Jewel Records in very nice shape. Some light surface scuffs on one side, thus far inaudible. Would love to know who is on this. No liner notes. One source says Hubert Sumlin is in the band. Clues anyone? #musicsky #music

Not been a fan of a few things he's said lately; but Grumpy Mike has seen off a boatload of wannabe challengers in Collinwood over the years for a reason. Even getting his ward changed several times didn't dislodge him, bc people know they can work with him + he handles the basic stuff well.

That's fair; it's also sort of a default position. Unfortunately, a band has to do more than that, in order to make progress in the current environment, even locally + small-scale. Those who don't make progress, peter out over time. Don't wanna do that.

BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Absolutely. I was part of a band whose show in 2015 was where a couple who now live in my neighborhood met. Still treasure that fact.

Maybe by writing it out, someone else may think of something I can learn, tho. Our path forward is coming, album 3 is in mixdown. Kitten time's over, it's time to *become* something distinct, mature, + knowable. There are no "leaders", only paths. Point a way, if you know one. Thanks, shag

The "Concert" dynamic seems to fit us less + less over time, tho' + it appears to be on us to find a way to build a dynamic we do fit. Where we're integral to the night, but not its absolute, mandatory center. It's very hard to think like this; harder still to elucidate it.

BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But we can't be anything other than we are; nor should we try to be. The place where our music should fit in the culture did not vanish in 1978, 1988, or 1996; as armchair critics keep claiming. There are still things worth hearing from there.

BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
we're at. BS is sorta stuck in-between cultures; too heavy for "Tiny Desk", too light for Death Fests. Too conventional for DIY, too northern for Southern Rock or "red dirt". Can't jump around like emo kids, can't noodle like jam bands. Seems crazy to be a band so "normal" that we're odd ones out.
130
BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think we (BS) could be a good band for that too; however poorly I believe I'm explaining it. Problem is, how the hell does one sell this kind of thing in 2026? Jam bands (sorta) do; that's why I follow them + their people here, tho' I'm still stuck on how they get there, coming up. Like where...

I chose the term "mise-en-scene" bc it's far more than "background music"; tho' it's not totally foreground-imperative, either; greedily demanding full attention at all times. It absolutely sets the scene, tho', by which all sorts of other interesting activities related to their "vibe" can go on.
120
BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Other bands I think would be great mise-en-scene bands: Clutch Roxy Music Interpol Umphrey's McGee just to name a few from different genres. You could go to a place they're playing that has barely even any stage lights; + you'd still be stepping into their movie set, so to speak.
120
BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
...no one was compelled to watch them in order to enjoy what they were doing. They just poured it out through the room; + people felt it even if they weren't looking at the band. If you could recreate them, unknown, today; + put them in a 150-cap joint, with their songs, they'd still do it.
120
BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I feel like The Allman Brothers would've been a stellar example of a mise-en-scene band, before they became deified by the Fillmore East and doing Concerts. They didn't jump around like RHCP or Van Halen, trying to be "a show"; they played their music standing mostly still. And yet...

BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
...visual performance. Holding people's attention now requires circus-level firepower for both ears + eyes; + even if bands could provide that, the facilities can't fit that in. People watch us now like they're 'evaluating' us; weighing if we + we alone are worth their time. Tough row to hoe.

BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The problem with a lot of club shows these days is, everyone there feels obligated to do nothing but watch you, like it's a "concert" instead of a night out with folks at the fun spot. That obligation breeds a lot of expectations that most bands just aren't equipped to satisfy; in production or ...

BESSEMER SAINTS @clebsaints.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The band itself wasn't the total focus of attention all the time, magnificent tho' they were; but the atmosphere in the place would've been zero without them. They weren't the focus, but their music permeated the place + became most of the point of being there, acknowledged or otherwise.
